Abraham Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln was, by far, the most significant man of his time, and perhaps, the most significant of all time. His influential life all started on February 12, 1809, in a small log cabin in Hardin county. Both of Lincoln’s parents were illiterate. He rarely went to school and grew up doing farm work and chores. The only time Lincoln went to school in Hardin county was for a couple weeks. This small amount of schooling only taught him his ABCs. In 1816, when Lincoln’s family moved to Indiana, he helped his father build a cabin and a farm. Lincoln sometimes attended school with his sister. He went through many jobs, including a store clerk, a mill hand, and a postmaster. He made many friends in New Salem and was even friends with a gang. Abraham started studying mathematics and joined a debate club. He started to have a passion for politics. Lincoln was often depressed, though. Most think it was because both his sister and mother had died. Lincoln’s hard work eventually paid off. He was voted into the legislature in 1834. Lincoln decided to retire from politics in 1841 and focus on the law. Shortly after, in 1842, Lincoln married a woman named Mary Todd. They had 4 sons. Mary and Abraham were quite opposite and their marriage wasn’t always great. When Lincoln started a law practice he partnered with Stephen Logan. Lincoln was making $1200 a year at the time. While being in law practice, Lincoln felt like he wasn’t doing enough. He decided to run for congress with the Whig Party and won. He was making close to $5000 a year, which was considered quite wealthy at the time. One thing didn’t change about Lincoln, and that was his hate for slavery. He started giving speeches against it. Abraham Lincoln decided to form a new party that was against slavery. In 1856, the Republican Party formed. They nominated Lincoln. He decided to challenge senator Douglas to debates. Douglas accepted. During the debates, he said many racist things about black people. Despite this, Douglas still won office. In 1860 Lincoln got sweet revenge by becoming president. Even though Lincoln was now president, he felt he couldn’t interfere with slavery. After Lincoln became president, the seven slave states joined to form The Confederacy.
