While Lincoln faced opposition to some of his beliefs a majority of his actions influenced the United States in the long term. The Emancipation Proclamation was a decree that freed slaves in areas of rebellion if they were to fight in the war, which did not please everyone (Faragher,396). Abraham Lincoln would lead the Republican Party even though he did not win the south over in the election. He promised that he would save the Union no matter what the cost. This disconnect in policy would later lay the basis for the Civil War, which started in 1861. He never envisioned a proclamation or ending slavery but he was ultimately committed to saving the Union from the succeeding south. Lincoln gave into the antislavery Republicans toward the end of the war and finally decided to make slavery the true basis of the war.
Struggle for Change Abraham Lincoln wanted for slavery to be ended because he found it unfair to the African Americans who were imprisoned. He wanted for Congress to pass the thirteenth amendment for the abolishment of slavery. Lincoln made sure that Congress and the southern states understood that he wouldn’t give up until he got what he wanted, slavery to be abolished. Although it took time to declare freedom for slaves, now many years later, slaves are free to become anyone they want to be. Not only did this event affect the lives of slaves, but it affected the lives of everyone living in the United States because now our society has a diverse culture. Therefore, allowing a person to love who they want, whether the person is of a different ethnicity.

I believe this because even though Lincoln did serve as the president in the Civil War, another big part of his legacy was how he was the first president to be assassinated while in office. Another reason why I believe Lincoln 's legacy would 've changed if he wasn 't murdered at Ford Theatre is, the long historical manhunt for John Wilkes Booth.
