What characteristics define a hero? Is it their ability with words, the mental and physical strength? A hero is any person who inspires others to fulfill these goals, but, great ones are average people who accomplish these great feats for the sake of others, these people aren’t in it for the fame and glory, more because it’s the right thing to do. Real heroes are people who go out of their way to benefit others. A great example of this is Welles Crowther, during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he ran into the south tower to save as many people as he possibly could. Since he was sixteen he had been a volunteer firefighter and thought it was his civic duty to help them. This saved over 12 people, but cost him his life. These heroes all help people do similar things as well. To begin with, on 9/11 there was a great number of people who sailed out to the island and picked people up in order to get them to safety. One of these people who was just a blue collar fisherman who said ‘I knew that if I was there, I would be scared beyond... and I knew that I would want someone to help get me to safety, so that’s what I did’. There was also a wounded soldier who persevered even without legs, he once said ‘...but if the progress I have made motivates another wounded veteran to keep going…’ (SB, pg 59) this shows that he was only doing this for himself but if it helped someone all the better. An even greater example is Mohandas Gandhi, he was a non-violent freedom fighter during the British rule of India. He saw how his people were being treated and once said “An eye for an eye, will make the whole world blind.” This quote shows that your intentions must be pure, and the only way to actually be free is to rise above those who oppress you, without having a full blown
