Lincoln once said “I do the very best I know how- the very best I can; and I mean to keep on doing so until the end.” Lincoln always strived to be the best he could be in everything he participated in whether it be chopping down a tree or becoming a lawyer. Although Lincoln had awful manners he was very successful in everything that he done. There were many experiences throughout Lincoln’s lifetime that made him an attractive candidate for the United States Presidency in 1860. The three experiences that led to Lincoln being a candidate for presidency are him serving in the Black Hawk War, The Lincoln Douglas debates, and his role in politics. Lincoln who was looking for work after the Offutt store had failed decided to volunteer to serve in the militia for the Black Hawk War. This war broke out in the spring before the 1832 election when a band of Saux and Fox Indians crossed the Mississippi and reoccupied their old lands in Illinois. Backed by the Clary Grove Boys that were already in his company, who already had the respect of Lincoln due to an arm wrestling match, elected Lincoln Captain. This election gave him so much satisfaction. He never was on the front lines but he was proud of his service. John T. Stuart recommended that Lincoln become a lawyer and when he passed his Exam they eventually became partners. He became a very well like and respectable lawyer and was often hired by the Illinois Central Railroad. Lincoln got re-elected to the General Assembly in 1836,1838, and 1840. He had a role in getting the state capital moved to Springfield. He resigned in 1854 to be eligible for the election of the U.S. Senate. He was elected in 1846 to the U.S. House of Representatives. All of these roles he took on in politics gave him a better chance at becoming the Republican Presidential
