Abraham Lincoln's Accomplishments

Abraham Lincoln was one of Americas most amazing presidents. He managed to keep America together through one of its worst times. Abraham Lincoln’s honesty and integrity made him one of America’s greatest presidents because he was able to reunite the country during an extremely troubled time.

Abraham Lincoln was born February 12, 1809. His childhood home was a one room rustic log cabin with a dirt floor. He once fell into a river. While almost drowning, he was saved by a kind neighbor. His mother would gather them in the evening to recite The Bible to him and his siblings (Russell Freedman 9). They were married on June 10, 1806. Thomas first proposed to Sarah Bush, but she did not accept. Two days later he proposed to Nancy Hanks and she said yes. Thomas Lincoln started his life in Virginia. He was a stocky well-built man with black hair and an unusually large nose. Thomas had three brothers and one sister. Nancy was born in West Virginia in 1784. Nancy’s mother’s name was Lucy Hanks. Unfortunately like most pioneer women and men Nancy, did not know how to write or read. Like all pioneer women Nancy hanks worked very, very hard. Whenever Nancy would sign a legal document instead of her name she put an “X”. She milked cows, shelled beans, hoed the garden, and fetched water from a spring that was a mile away (Candace Fleming 2). His mother died from what pioneers called “milk sickness” in 1818. After Abraham’s mother died his father then married Sarah Bush Lincoln who became Abe’s stepmother. His step mother brought them silver utensils, a set of chairs, bedding, and a table (G. Frederick Owen 10). Sarah Bush was a woman of energy, thrift, and gentleness. Sarah Bush helped her step children create habits of comfort and cleanliness. Sarah Bush’s smile radiated the sunshine in the room. Abe’s sister’s name was Sarah. Abraham and Sarah were best friends. Sarah would often tell her brother some very entertaining bedtime stories. She also refused to go to school unless Abe did. Tragically his sister died in childbirth.

People in the southern states were very unhappy to have a president that opposed slavery. The southern states began to form an army. They demanded all the United States soldiers to leave the southern forts. Abraham Lincoln told the southerners that he would let slavery continue in the south to keep the United States together. On January 1, 1863 Abraham Lincoln signed the emancipation proclamation abolishing slavery in the United States. In 1861 Abraham Lincoln avoided war with the British (Trent affair) (World book Inc. 322).
