Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address is considered to be one of the most notable speeches presented in American history. Orated after the Battle of Gettysburg, one of the most detrimental battles during the Civil War, Lincoln addressed two main focal points in his 272 word speech. Hoping to ameliorate the nation due to the war between the states, through his polemic, President Lincoln established the importance of the preservation of the Union and the recognition that “all men are created equal.” The dogmatic notions presented by Lincoln ultimately swayed the need for a united nation. The Battle itself may have only lasted three days, but the casualties were monumental. Resulting from the battle, the Union acquired 23,000 casualties in total and the Confederates acquired 28,000 deaths. The deaths of the Confederate soldiers greatly impacted the Northern Virginia army because the loss of 28,000 members resulted in a loss of more than one-third of Lee’s army. The Battle of Gettysburg is known to be the largest and bloodiest battle fought during the Civil War and ultimately in the history of American warfare. Between the Union and the Confederacy there were more than 50,000 deaths, wounds, and missing soldiers. This was drastic to America because the mass amount of injuries had never been seen before on the mainland. Ultimately the Confederate General retreated his troops and returned them towards Virginia. Although Major General Meade did not call his troops to pursue the enemy troops after the Battle of Gettysburg, the Battle itself brought shame to the Confederacy.
