Have you ever asked someone, "Who was the best US President?" I encourage you to try it, listen to the responses you get. You might get the responses: Washington, Roosevelt, or Jefferson, some might even say our current president, Obama. As for my personal opinion, I believe that Abramham Lincoln was our nations best President. Lincoln is remembered for his character and leadership, his speeches and letters, and most importantly his impact on the end of slavery here in the United States. He has done a lot for our country, and I intend on informing you why I choose to believe he was our best president.
President Abraham Lincoln was always true to his character, even before his presidential term. He was married in 1842, and had four sons before his election in 1861. Lincoln had actually lost five separate elections before being elected president in '61. At age 23, he had ran for his first Illinois political office, and failed. Two years later he gained a seat as a member of The Whig Party. In 1856 he joined the Republican Party, and two years after that he ran for US Senate; By doing so he made a name for himself. Some of his most important speeches include: The Lyceum Address (1938), The Farewell Address (1861), The Gettysburg Address (1863), and finally, his Last Public Address (1865), which encouraged his murder by John Wilkes Booth. The most well-known speech of his, which is taught in schools today, is The Gettysburg Address. This speech took place in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania on November 19th, 1863. The Gettysburg National Cemetery was dedicated by President Abraham Lincoln a brief four months after the Gettysburg Battle.
