With every person we meet we hold power over one another in ways that often go overlooked. These things affect how each individual is treated and lives their lives. In the story, Kindred by Octavia E. Butler, a work of science fiction, both the main character Dana and the child version of her ancestor, Rufus, exert power over one another with Dana holding the most. According to Merriam-Webster, the definition of power is “possession of control, authority, or influence over others.” In this story, power is an important theme.
But first what is Power? When researching Power words such as authority, control, direct, command and influence all appear. These words all support the following statement “Power is the ability to influence and control the behaviour of others.” The problem with power is that it often leads to those in power abusing it. As Lord Acton famously quoted “Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.”
In recent years, many Americans on both sides of the political spectrum have been showing very counter-cultural attitudes via the internet and their choice of president. These attitudes are similar to that of people living in the 1960’s. In that period of counter-cultural ideas, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey, a counter-cultural book, was published. One major theme that frequently appears throughout the book’s entirety is Corruption of power, as the antagonist, Nurse Ratched, displays the tendencies of corrupt, undemocratic leaders throughout the novel, as the novel builds her up as being a very power-hungry individual. Nurse Ratched’s corrupt character, as well as her neglect of democracy in group sessions and neglect for the helpless mental patients shows that the purpose of Nurse Ratched’s character may have been to provoke thought about whether we Americans truly live in a fair and democratic nation.

Fear and tyranny are abused by people with power creating a negative effect on society. Leaders with a huge rule of power will abuse their role as a leader by creating a fearful environment.
I have recently read the short story “Priscilla and the Wimps” by Richard Peck. In response to the prompt, I do not believe that Priscilla’s treatment of Monk was justified. When dealing with conflict, it is crucial not to resort to physical violence, otherwise it may further escalate the conflict. Technically, if you resort to physical violence to try to stop bullying, you are just as bad as the bully. In the story, Monk was picking on Melvin (Peck 2), who was Priscilla’s closest friend (Peck 1), and Priscilla ended up putting him in a hammerlock and then locking him in a locker for a whole week (Peck 3).

The pigs immediately gain control and leadership of the farm and eventually start to abuse the power. The pigs abuse their power by changing the commandments, living in luxury, and by treating the animals poorly. First and foremost, the pigs start changing the commandments to fit their acts and desires. In the beginning of the story, the animals decide on fair rules that everyone on the farm should abide by.
