Have you ever felt powerless? How have you ever felt too powerful? Have you ever been abused by power? Have you ever abused your power? Well, you might have felt like the character Helmuth from The Boy Who Dared by Susan Campbell Bartoletti when he was abused by the Nazis during WW2 and then even killed when they used too much of their power. Also during that time, many other people were hurt and killed because of Hitler’s power. This is why the theme is that power could be abused, and can kill and hurt people because of it. The story was about a boy from WW2 who was trying to fight against the Nazis and then got killed because of it. Also his family got hurt from the power because they lost their kid also in helmuth school they were getting controlled by the hitler youth. My first reason is that people can get hurt by power as the character Helmuth was hurt because of hitler’s power and trying to stand up to it as he got hurt by it. This is proven by the book in the beginning as he was killed or going to be killed and this was because of his stand up hitler power. This is shown as that the nazi force the school teachers to join sa and let the hitler youth do what they want to do. As said in the book when they tried to stand up for themselves as they got killed for and also people were forced to agree with him like some of helmuth teachers agreed with on pg 28 “herr zinger comes in with a sa uniforme” The Boy Who Dared. Hitler also forced the army to do cruel things like kill the jews and send people to labor camps that killed people. This is showing that people can do whatever they want and also force people to do what they do not want to do like Join the sa, let the hitler youth do want they want, and lastly be able to force other people to not do
