I selected Aprille Ericsson for multiple reasons. One being that I know blacks make up only about 3.3% of engineering professionals in the United States. Building on the first reason, I was curious how Ericsson navigated through her career with the National Aeronautical and Space Administration (NASA) against the definite lack of diversity among the engineering profession. Aprille Ericsson became the first African American female to receive a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Howard University in Washington, DC.
This article does not focus on the entire minority group because in the tech industry, Asians are one of the top race next to Caucasians (Ulloa, 2016, para.5) to be hired and women of colors are more likely to be selected because they fit in two of the diversity demographics. In a study of about 29,500 students taking an AP computer science exam proves that black and Latino men only make up 9.3% of the population. “Tech professionals say the obstacles for black and Latinos men are many, from economic disparities in wealth and income to differences in the ways boys are taught at school and home.” (Ulloa, 2016, para.8). Being raised to being force to respect, never talk back, or told to never question authority, lead to these men having a complex relationship with authority.
It is believed that attending a PWI institution presents those students with better chances to obtain a career than the neighbors at HBCUs. Granted HBCUs make up a smaller percentage of American colleges;, these schools provided the nation with an abundant amount of “black doctors, lawyers, dentists, teachers, and other professionals.” AlsoIn addition, students from HBCUs of today “produce 24 percent of black STEM grads and make up almost 35 percent of all bachelor’s degrees earned by black grads in astronomy, biology, chemistry, math, and physics” (Samara Freemark).” This goes to portray that HBCUs rightfully prepare students for careers with the same or even greater potential of those students that attend PWIs. HBCUs paved the way for African Americans in the different fields of science, and without its contribution, very little to none blacks would have gained experience in the different careers that shape American society.
Summary Freeman Hrabowski talks about how to improve the shortcomings of university attendees, especially those who are minorities and majored in science and engineering. According to him, we must first set high expectations which will drive students. It is all about having a thorough understanding, and not just enough to barely make it through. He states that secondly, a community has to be built among students by working in groups in order to support, understand and trust one another, as well as helping each other succeed. Hrabowski then explains how it takes researchers to produce researchers meaning, we have to expose the upcoming generations to the many exciting fields available to keep the fields and their enthusiasm alive.

They do; Even though there's laws against inequality of blacks, Mexicans,etc, the minority of the U.S has a harder time becoming successful compared to white people/. The unemployment rate for people of color is 9.5% and compared to the rate of whites(2.2%), we aren't given a very fair shot at getting a job. Recently, some of them are even being killed by cops for reasons that have no proof behind it. For example: The person had a gun or tried to attacked the cop. The circumstances of each of these situations are very suspicious.
Hoekenga (2012) noted that the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the Hispanic population in the U.S will reach 132.8 million by the year 2050, when almost one in three Americans will be Hispanic. Yet today Hispanic students (as well as other minorities) continue to be underrepresented in the STEM disciplines (Hoekenga, 2012). In the face of these disparities Hispanic scientists have had a major and lasting impact on the world around them. In many cases they overcame obstacles, including racism and sexism, poverty, cultural and family expectations, and lack of mathematics background, in order to work and excel in the fields that they love.
Dreams That Can Be Accomplished African American history is filled with a plethora of contributions in the music, acting, and sport industries, but some young adults fail to recognize the African American contributions to the science field. For decades, minority women have been the most underrepresented individuals in science, engineering, and medicine. Being one of less than 100 African American women physicists in the United States, Dr. Hadiyah-Nicole Green has been an inspiration to me to pursue a degree in Chemistry. She once said, “It’s important to know that our brains are capable of more.” It is important for African American women to further their skills and know that they are a valuable part of the workplace and that their contributions to STEM is essential.

Each of these things help encourage or assist minority students to pursue a degree in STEM fields. A study by Gaucher found that job advertisements for male-dominated careers tended to use more argentic words (or words denoting agency, such as "leader" and "goal-oriented") associated with male stereotypes. The stereotype threat is one of the important reasons domestic females are underrepresented in STEM field. Because stereotype threats bring females extra stresses, they could lead to negative academic performances for females, especially for those studying mathematics and science. The ways in which diversity can impact on work and work relationships: Cultural diversity can affect the workplace in numerous ways. Negative impacts can include miscommunication, creation of barriers, and dysfunctional adaptation behaviors. Positive impacts can include building a sound knowledge base fellow colleagues, which can make for smoother integration of the organization into foreign cultures. Many organizations have recognized that the workforce is changing and they are working to create a work environment in which diversity and difference are valued and in which employees can work to their fullest. They are dealing with the problems that arise when people in the workplace communicate.
Today’s most business primary concern is retaining workforce diversity. Recognizing the importance of diversity in the organization and effectively manage to ensure the organization and its valuable diverse employees are growing hand in hand. Rising of immigrants’ employment opportunity, joint venturing business globally has equally brought an opportunity for shared values, exchange of cultures and intelligence to widen the opportunity for business enterprise and also a platform for employees to reach target goal.
