When I was informed that I would be writing an essay on the best president in US history, one man immediately came to mind. That man was the twenty-sixth president of the United States, President Theodore Roosevelt. With his major accomplishments in foreign policy, and his work in protecting the environment, that easily qualifies him as the best president. Although some of his accomplishments might not be well known, such as his founding of the National Park Service and the US Forest Service, some of his other accomplishments might be more well known such as the creation of the Panama Canal. He founded these programs because he had great pride in the environment and felt that it should be protected. During his presidency, he preserved over 230 million acres for the public to use recreationally. He was able to do this when he signed the Antiquities Act. This act stated that archaeological sites should be protected and preserved for the future. Some of the land that he preserved is being used for national parks such as Yosemite National Park in California. Roosevelt also passed the National Reclamation Act. This act in sure that the money earned from the sale of government land wouldn’t go to supply water to farms in the west. One example that could be his enacting of the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA). This act ensured that employees that were injured on the job would be able to get benefits and compensation from their employers. This act mainly benefited injured railroad workers. Another example of how he was a president for the people was because he was anti-monopoly and a “Trust Buster”. What he would do is make sure that companies didn’t have a monopoly over a certain market. He would fight the big corporations to make sure that everyone had a chance. Some of those companies include the railroad companies, the tobacco companies, the oil companies, and the beef companies. Although the Sherman Antitrust Act was previously in place, it was still not enough to fight monopolies. The Sherman Antitrust Act was put into place because big companies would have a monopoly on their chosen industry. This meant that they could take advantage of their employees and their customers because there was no there to stop them. While in office, his administration filed over 40 lawsuits. Lastly, in 1902, members of the United Miners Workers decided to go on strike in order to earn more rights. This lesson for many months. During the strike, winter was quickly approaching. President Roosevelt acted neutral and offered an arbitration because there was a need for coal with winter approaching. As a result, miners got paid more and worked less.
