In the article “With No Boys to Ogle, We Had Time to Learn” by Christine Flowers that was published in Newsweek on October 24, 2005, Flowers discusses the benefits of single-gender schools. Flowers attended an all girls school during her secondary education and continued her single-sex education in college. Flowers claims that this was extremely beneficial for her, and is also beneficial for most educational institutions. Flowers first begins by talking about her own decision to extend her single-sex education into her college years.
After breaking her class into small groups Tannen explains, “I could see plainly from my observation of the groups at work that women who never opened their mouths in class were talking away in the small groups” (359). Tannen’s results prove the idea that the genders participate in different ways. More specifically she uses all three rhetoric strategies in this one quote to explain to the audience that how comfortable someone feels will change how often, or even when they choose to participate. Starting with her ethos, she uses her professional background, not only as a teacher but also as a writer about gender in the classroom, to experiment in her classroom. This leads to logos, in this quote, she explains the outcomes of her experiment, data that has a direct correlation to scientific procedure, she explains in her essay that she broke the class up six times in different ways and the whole women’s group produced participation.

There are many different views and opinions on the matter. Some believe that it is very feminine environment that boys are introduced to in the classroom and making the classroom more appealing to boys is the best solution. The teacher wants to nurture positive gender identities. Activities should encourage equality of participation by both genders. The classroom should be an anti-bias environment. By doing so, the teacher is helping children of all races and culture background form heathy identity and attitudes. In “Girls”, we can encounter what happens to be a list of things that a girl should do or should avoid doing, and a list of behavior that she should exhibit or avoid. In order to address the issue of sexism within the academic environment, we need to take a firm stance in combating gender discrimination and the attitudes that women are unlikely to secure tenure status and raise a family as a faculty within higher education.
