Aeneas seems to be similar to that of Homer’s Achilles in the latter books of the Aeneid. Achilles and Aeneas share similar qualities within their characterization. Although both characters also display many differences throughout each of the epic poems, in book twelve of the Aeneid clearer similarities between the two characters become evident. The main similarity between these characters in latter books of the Aeneid is displayed when Aeneas kills Turnus. Aeneas’ rage at Pallas’ death by Turnus becomes evident and Aeneas seeks to kill Turnus as revenge. Aeneas loses control of his moral compass and allows his rage to overcome him, similar to Achilles’ rage towards Hector throughout the Iliad. The largest difference is the differences displayed in their mentalities towards battle. Achilles is very hostile and violent. He allows his anger to drive the Iliad and is perceived as being able to kill others mercilessly. He also has little respect for those he fights with, which becomes clear in his treatment of Hector’s dead body. Achilles fights for glory and to avenge the death of his friend, Patroclus, by killing Hector, a motive of anger that drives the entire poem. His purpose is not to end the war, but rather to merely kill Hector for personal satisfaction. In contrast, Aeneas is a much more compassionate warrior who displays qualities of love, piety, and commitment. He never abandons his forces and is a true leader in guiding the Trojans to Italy. Aeneas’ quest for glory is not an individual one, like Achilles’, but is for the benefit of the Trojans as a whole. Homer depicts Achilles by emphasizing his pride, selfishness, and wrath; a wrath so immense he was content with his own people dying in battle. Virgil portrays Aeneas by focusing on his selflessness and commitment to his mission. Achilles is brave, but vain; he is respected but misguided by anger.
