Millions of Americans suffer from acidity, commonly known as heartburn at least once a month. Acidity can cause acid reflux, which results in a burning sensation in the chest and throat area. The irritation is caused by reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus (the food tube between mouth and stomach). Stomach acid is required to break down the foods we consume. The stomach fluids are very acidic (pH of 1 to 3) in order to help digest the food. A pH ranges from 0 to 14; these numbers measure how acidic or basic a component. 7 is neutral, anything under 7 is acidic, and anything greater than 7 is basic or alkaline. A substance is distinguished as acidic or basic in comparison to the hydrogen ion concentration relative to pure water; distilled water also has a pH level of 7. Some substances can make the pH level of a substance raise or decrease.
