Starting off with Addiction as my first topic I choose the film The Fighter. I feel this film fits addiction because it is a film about a boxer (Mickey) trying to gain fame after his bother’s (Dickey) fame in the ring; while balancing family and his brothers’ addiction. The two perspectives I would use to explain behavior in this film would be Sociology: family dynamics and Anthropology: boxing culture. I choose Family dynamics because the main character Mickey has a large controlling family run by the mother. The family interferes with Mickey’s Career and with Mickey’s relationships. I would include Boxing culture because Mickey is a boxer and the sport has a culture of its own. Mickey is pushed to keep fighting past his prime and to fight for money instead of wins. Mickey even shows the addiction of a win in sports. Over all I feel this shows many perspectives that could explain addiction.
My second Film choice is What is Eating Gilbert Gape For Family Dynamics. I feel this film fits family dynamics because it is a film about a small town young man supporting his three other siblings. This is a story about a young man’s (Pat) struggles after coming home from a stay in a mental institution. The first perspective I would choose would be Sociology of family dynamics. Pat’s Family struggles to understand his condition and wants him to just stay home with them. They see Pat’s mental breakdown as water under the bridge, while Pat is trying to pick up the pieces of his life and get back what he had. The second perspective I would use is Psychology of Bi-polar Disorders. Pat is diagnosed with Bi-polar disorder, and his friend/love interest exhibits signs of having Bi-polar disorder. Over all I feel this Film could offer may perspectives to help explain Mental Heath
