Common Core Standards have been around for a long period of time. Each state, fall under a grade-level educational standard. Around the 1900s standards movement was formed. This movement underlined what students anticipated to learn and be able to perform at each grade level and assessments were developed to assess whether the students were meeting the standards. This education reform movement was established to ensure that all students were graduating secondary school. A report that focused on high school graduation (2004) demonstrated that colleges and employments were expecting more of students than they previously did. The initial purpose of the standards was to provide an explicit understanding of what students are expected to know so that teachers and parents gained the satisfactory knowledge on students’ needs and determine how to help them from there. Additionally, the standards were developed to assure that all students that are enrolled in a school gain the sufficient skills and knowledge necessary to succeed. Not only as they go on to acquire a higher level of education but also to be able to maintain a career and live a better life. If we are looking at a specific subject area such as English Language Art (ELA), the common core standards are intended for students to acquire comprehension skills which will be needed not only to be successfully academically but also as they to go to explore the real world. Students are expected to give a deeper understanding of what is read, they must be able to effectively talk about it and write about it. With the old standards, students would be expected to solely emphasize on reciting facts that they have learned throughout the text. However, with the new standards students are projected to read more complex text than they did at the previous grade levels, and they are challenged to think critically and display analytic
