Common Core State Standards Riding on the back of state led standards, Common Core has been designed towards the goals of college and career readiness. Although there are continuous developments in education, Common Core provides an approach that is intended to prepare students for success in the real-world. There have been three major shifts within these standards of ELA and math and allows students to have a deeper grasp on their education. ELA classrooms now focus on learning goals that increase in complexity to prepare learners for college level work in the future. By creating a content-rich environment, Common Core requires learners to have a “strong general knowledge” (4) as well as a complex academic vocabulary.
New standards encourage a cross-disciplinary approach requiring reading teachers to now teach other subjects such as history, science, and the arts by selecting content rich nonfiction materials that encourage diversity across genres, cultures, and eras. Common Core actually decreased the amount of topics covered in a year in order for teachers to provide a more in depth education of topics. Now, topics in math have been organized into scaffolding instruction to enhance learning by building on students’ prior knowledge. Although critics argue that Common Core math standards are repetitive, the reality is that it is designed to help students improve on the basic skills before moving on. The goal is for students to master a concept before moving on to the next and make connections of prior knowledge to current knowledge.
