After watching both videos, “The English Language Arts Standards: Key Changes and their Evidence” and “The Mathematics Standards: Key Changes and their Evidence,” I now realized where the need for the Common Core standards arise from, with the United States being behind in education ranking at 14th and our students performing at a low standard. The Common Core standards were formed to help combat this situation. Our students were entering college and the workforce under prepared. The Common Core standards were implemented with the understanding that these standards would help our students to graduate high school, college and career ready. These standards will provide a better understanding and mastering skills in language arts and mathematics.
The philosophy that I found to be closely aligned with the Common Core Standard is that of “Analytic Philosophy”

The reason for these changes were that concerns arise that students were struggling to read above an 8th grade level. The five shifts that was stated are:
1. Text complexity, 80% of what is read is informational text
2. Analyze, infer and give evidence. Proficient students make valid claims from the text and providing supporting evidence from text.
3. Writing to sources, writing to put their thoughts to text. Research is a focal point.
4. Mastery of writing and speaking, oral as well as writing
5. Ago academic vocabulary, words that go across the disciplines. If students don’t understand the meaning of the words they won’t understand the text. Read like a detective and write like an investigative reporter, clear and concise (The Hunt Institute, 2011).
In Mathematics the standard changes that were implemented for Kindergarten to High school are:
1. Operations and Algebraic thinking (OA) to Expressions and Equations(EE) to Algebra.
2. Number of Operations in Base Ten (NBT) to Number System(NSS) to
