Common Core: It’s a No from Me It is no secret that the American education system is not the best. Just like all things there is room for improvement and one of the ways the government goes about improving this system is by implementing education reforms. One such reform is the Common Core State Standards, which was created by the government in order to correct the No Child Left Behind Act. Another idea behind the creation of Common Core was to create higher standards for students to achieve to help prepare them to compete with the students from other nations entering the workforce. It is important for students to have a good learning environment if they want to work hard and succeed, this is shown by in many schools there are countless rules in place that are supported by the fact of maintaining a good learning environment for the students. The controversy of Common Core does not help with that. With the backlash to Common Core students just don’t know what to do anymore. Parents are very anti-common core getting very involved with advocating against it, like going on Facebook and sharing their thoughts on how its ruining the education of youths (McKenna). So, at home they have to deal with parents telling them how horrible and frustrating school is. Then they have to go to school and hear even the teachers complain about the school system and how messed up it is. On top of that they have to deal with the state and local officials having to promote what everyone around them is saying is so bad. If all a student is basically told going through school is how damaged their education system is, what is going to stop them from having that negative outlook on learning from that so called failing system? When a person has a negative outlook on something they don’t focus on it or put much effort toward improving with it, they just do what they have to get it over with. They argue that the higher education standards are those that need to be met in order to help prepare high school students for college and careers. These proponents of Common Core acknowledge the faults with America’s schools seeing that “they could be more effective in preparing kids for the new, global economy and the ever-growing rigors of higher education,” (McKenna). At the same time, they also believe that Common Core can help to achieve this. They believe as Michael Petrilli states, that with Common Core comes these higher standards that will also lead to better tests to measure these higher standards (“Embrace the Common Core”). With these new standards and tests there is expected to be higher rates of success for those high school graduates going into college or straight into a career. While yes having higher standards for the students in today’s schools is not a bad thing, giving more standardized tests across the nation is. These people argue that the past standards kids were meeting, did not mean success for kids later on, but there is not research to support that these higher standards and supposedly better tests will improve or worsen the performance of students entering college or the
