ADHD is a chronic condition marked by lack of attention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. It begins in childhood and can last into adulthood. (Understanding ADHD -- the) There are three types of ADHD, inattentive type, hyperactive-impulsive type, and combination type. This presentation will focus specifically on inattentive type. (ADHD Inattentive Type) A child with ADHD will show symptoms such as daydreaming, leaving tasks unfinished, missing important details, making careless mistakes, and being quickly bored. They may also have trouble with organization, listening to instructions, and following instructions. (ADHD Inattentive type) Brain development is different for children with ADHD, especially in the frontal lobe. This makes it harder for kids with ADHD to hit the breaks and pay attention. (Morin) Scientists suspect a person with ADHD has a differently wired brain than a someone without ADHD. In a brain with ADHD the circuits that control the chemicals that allow us to focus are unconventional, making them harder to access. (Morin) Environmental factors may also play a role. Prenatal exposure to smoke, and exposure to high levels of lead as a toddler/preschooler have both been linked to ADHD. (Morin) It’s important to remember that brain injuries, epilepsy, and parenting choices do NOT cause ADHD. (Morin) Kids with ADHD may need help staying focused, here are a few techniques to help the child be successful. Writing things down, make lists so that the child won’t forget important tasks or events. (Chesner) Prioritize tasks, help the child learn which tasks come first. (Chesner) Be patient, listening to instruction is harder for kids with ADHD it’s totally ok to repeat things.
