There is some debate on whether we should physically restrain a person as a caregiver. This book does not tackle that debate. This is not another self-defense book. There are plenty of those out there already. I purposely did not spend a great deal of time showing this facet of the training.
It sets up Adult Protection Committees to review provisions for protecting vulnerable adults and expands causes of vulnerability to disability,
At Adult Protective Services majority of our work involves investigation of abuse, neglect, and exploitation. At Adult Protective Services our job is to protect the vulnerable elderly population, as well as the population that have disabilities. “Only APS is statutorily authorized and responsible for investigating elder and vulnerable adult abuse and taking steps to protect the victims, and it is generally only APS that helps the most frail and incapacitated older persons”(Quin, 2012, p.68). When abuse is suspected, a case worker will reach out to all parties involved, such as the alleged victim, alleged perpetrator, and all collaterals. Unlike many other professions, case worker are not required to have any written consent to speak with
Prospective JD candidate Jane Black analyzes the issue of elder abuse in her article “The Not-So-Golden Years: Power Of Attorney, Elder Abuse, And Why Our Laws Are Failing A Vulnerable Population” (particularly the financial aspect) and creates a solution to the glaring issues that plague the system meant to protect the elderly. Black uses three main points to produce an accurate look at the issues at hand. First, elderly people are particularly vulnerable to abuse making them easy targets. Second, the laws that are meant to keep the elderly safe are weak, thus enabling more abuse. Third, by creating stronger laws and programs, elder abuse can be curbed very easily.

The United States government is doing a surprisingly little amount for the million of elderly who are being abused everyday. An affective abuse policy increasing elderly protection services is immensely needed. The public should also be informed about elderly abuse, and the individuals who commit the crime of abusing the elderly should have stricter punishments. People in society can help towards pushing for a more goal driven elder justice policy. In the article, “The Elderly Must Be Protected From Abuse,” author Robert B. Blancato explains seven goals which should be addressed towards elderly justice.
They teach and practice safety through relationships and supervision. They emphasize the importance of safety from abuse and humiliation. The staff aid youths in building their academic and communication skills, so they are prepared when they are released. They even reach out to their families to aid in their rehabilitation, seeing family members can give them the desire to change
I want to start about by saying I enjoyed the My Virtual Child program. There is nothing I disliked about it When I learned we would be doing this program for the class I was very excited! It was everything I thought it would be. I say this because it was more so hands on and it connected my readings in the book to what might be going on with an actual child in real life.
Having knowledge of social policies is essential to address elder abuse because it is crucial to have valued information to provide to the service user or how to report any type of abuse or neglect with seniors. In Canada, elder abuse legislation is a responsibility of federal, provincial and municipal (Podnieks, 2008). Likewise, the federal Criminal Code (1985) defines the standards for criminal justice through the country. Hence, this code has strengths and limitation regarding elder abuse.
Prior to taking the Elders course, I had limited interactions with older adults and was not aware about the services that are needed for this specific population. Throughout the course, I was exposed to many readings, lectures and guest speakers that enabled me to gain copious amounts of new information that gave me a deeper look into the lives of older adults. I realized the importance of social workers’ understanding, and familiarizing themselves with policies that affect this population. Throughout social work schooling, students are exposed to many social theories, but this class specifically focused on the ones that directly apply to older adults. According to McInnis-Dittrich (2014), Social constructionism is a theory that people of all
Safeguarding is protecting people's health, wellbeing and human rights, and enabling them to live free from harm, abuse and neglect. Abuse comes in many forms, for example, physical, sexual, verbal, financial, emotional, discriminatory abuse and neglect and working in substance misuse it is important for me to protect individuals against safeguarding issues, such as blood borne viruses, drug awareness, drug dealing, sex working, domestic violence, neglect to others and self-neglect. I have worked with vulnerable adults, who are or may be in need of community care services due to mental or other disability, age or illness, and who are or may be unable to take care of themselves, or unable to protect themselves against significant harm or exploitation. Safeguarding adults involves protecting their rights to live in safety, free from abuse and neglect. I have worked in partnership to prevent the risk of abuse or neglect and stopped it from happening.
Adult learners are also responsible for having and maintaining a good support system outside of class. This support
Malcom Knowles pioneered the adult learning theory but much more can be looked upon based on the various factors that affect it. Keeping Knowles theory of andragogy in mind, further studies can be done to go beyond his version and include broader perspectives in the field. Continuous research will help to know more about how adults can be engaged in learning and best methodologies to teach adults can be arrived
Before, I took this course my only interest for my future career was for becoming an elementary school teacher, but throughout taking this course I realized that I am interested in becoming a social worker as well. Being exposed to the content in this course, if I were to become a social worker in the future I would be interested in working with troubled youth and incarcerated youth, to help put them on the right path and to make sure that they do not end up spending their lives constantly being trouble or spending their lives being locked up. I have always had an interest with people who are incarcerated and watching documentaries about jails/prisons, and working with children but lecture four ‘The professions of social work’ engaged my interests even more because during the lecture child protection and the criminal justice system were talked about, not in great detail but it still engaged my interests because during that moment I realized if I became a social worker I would want to work with troubled youth and incarcerated youth because I would be working with the child to ensure that they strive to have the best life possible for themselves. For academic purposes, one theory that I would be interested to learn more about in my academic future would be the psychodynamic theory, although I have learned about this theory in my other classes as well, I still find it one of
In the UK, over five hundred thousand abuse against elderly people occurred each year. These abuses can occur anywhere, including in someone own home, residential home or hospital. Both older men and women can be at risk of abuse, though the majority of victims are women over the age of 70’s. There are five common types of abuse; physical, psychological, financial, sexual abuse and neglect. Where does elderly abuse to place Elder abuse tends to take place where the senior lives: most often in the home where abusers are often adult children, other family members such as grandchildren, or spouses/partners of elders.
