Role of the Advanced Practice Nurse The role of the advanced practice nurse is very diverse. There are four roles that I am going to discuss in this paper and they are as follows, Nursing Informatics (NI), Nurse Educator, Nurse Administrator, and Nurse Practitioner (NP). According to the American Nurses Association (ANA) Nursing Informatics is defined as a specialty that combines nursing with multiple information management and analytical science. In general, the ANA defines their position as overseeing the integration of data, information and knowledge to support decision-making by patients and their healthcare providers. The nurse educators are utilized in many healthcare settings such as, hospital, healthcare clinics, and universities. Nurse educators play a vital role in nursing, by serving as role models and providing leadership skills acquired to incorporate evidence-based practice into nursing field. They are responsible for designing, implementing and evaluation, educating the staff and public, and evaluating academic and continuing education programs. This advance practice role requires a masters or doctoral level of education and is founded on nursing theory and research. They strive to prepare nurses for the populations they serve. Nurse educations are current on evidence-based teaching, educations and research. Nurse educators are committed to education research, and evidence-based teachings. Their role is to constantly incorporate research findings into nursing practice (Nayak,2015). As a result their role is to ensure that the best practices are followed according to the policies and procedures throughout the organization. Nurse administrators possess strong leadership and organizational skills. In addition they understand the various roles and cultures that help make up the organization. They focus on the business aspect of patient centered care and they also require a masters or doctoral degree. Nursing administration on a national level is best described by The National Center for HealthCare Leadership (NCHL). This is a non profit organization that exemplifies quality care and leadership in the 21 st century. The goal of this organization is to improve healthcare on a national level through efficient and effective management that is in accordance with it’s mission. In keeping with it’s mission, NCHL embarked upon an ambitious initiative with the support of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, examining the role of the senior leadership team in promoting quality and safety in his/her organization (Disch, Dreher, Davidson, Sinioris, & Wainio, 2011).
