The Disadvantages of Being a Black Person in America
For years, African Americans have been mistreated because of how they look or were born. Causing many African Americans to become financially underprivileged. Especially during the evolution of gentrification in Black neighborhoods. As houses are slowly being scooped up by investors, this contributes to the decrease in black homeownership. A prime example is Akili Akridge who was in the process of selling his townhome but while in the process of selling, he disclosed his race, then the agencies said the market was closed. History shows time and time again that these promises were broken. This led many African Americans to become broke or accumulate low income leading to generational poverty. Despite being illegal there are many cases recent and past to show that discrimination still occurs. An example from an online source states, “The few loans available in redlined areas were very expensive, which made it even harder to buy a home and build wealth.” Causing many Black customers to acquire overpriced living with no equity until they pay their last payment. Intentionally wanting Black customers to be in debt to the process of paying toward the loan rather than reaping the benefits.
