Democracy. It is a powerful word. One that originates from ancient Greece, at the cradle of civilisation.The word democracy comes from the Greek δημο meaning “the people” and κρατία meaning “power” or “rule”. When the two words are put together it forms δημοκρατία, meaning “rule of the people”. Logically enough, the English word itself is derived from older Middle French or Middle Latin equivalents. As we know, this system is a norm to the Western world, in order to preserve personal “freedom” and make sure that the “will of the people” is upheld. Adversely, it is not a social norm to ask yourself why this system is in place, or if it is truly what man hungers for? Times change and with it human desires, but not many people challenge it or seem to think outside the box. Why is that so? Not many dare to explore the flaws or disadvantages democracy has, but it is essential for the furtherment of our society that one must do so. To begin this process we must start through exploring the foundations of democracy, it will facilitate our understanding of the challenges and consequences the implementation of such a system has. We shall first go back; back to its roots, back to where it all began.
