Before the days of labor laws and unions, there was a time in which laws were not able to keep up with a rapidly changing industrial economy. As machinery and technology advanced, so did the possible amount of revenue being generated. Unfortunately, this machinery made it so unexperienced workers, such as children and teenagers, could work hours on end creating products. With little legislation in place, these vulnerable workers were exploited in factories and mills. Many individuals, such as Florence Kelley, called for change by creating speeches that would be presented in large conventions and rallies.
England was becoming more Industrialized as the days and years went on but their workers and citizens were still unhappy. The factory workers had very harsh working conditions and politics were also indecisive. There were many ways in which people tried to solve political and worker problems. Some of these include labor laws, reform laws, and the Chartist movement. There were many concerns that factory workers felt.
During the years 1880-1920 there were many issues because of urbanization and industrialization. The industrial revolution brought many new job opportunities with low wages making companies focus on women and children. These opportunities were available but at a cost, they were paid less and they were forced to work up to ten hours. The industrial giants made labor a tough and unfair lifestyle. They wanted more riches, but they were making people suffer in order to obtain the money.
Dr. Stow expresses that “as a class, they [the laborers] are dwarfed physically.” Stow clarifies his statement by explaining that these physical and psychological ailments have come as a result of the lack of fresh air and intense heat of the mills of which the laborers work in. The failure of politicians to pass legislation to improve the welfare of workers unfortunately led to several other instances of abuse similar to the kinds expressed in the report. Subsequently, laborers began to unionize in order to advocate for more humane working conditions. These unions supported things such as an 8-hour work day, child labor protections, and higher wages.
(Shi, pg. 779) There were also little to no regulations on these large industrial corporations. An industrial worker would labor for long hours “in unsafe, unsanitary, and unregulated conditions for extremely low wages.” (Shi, pg. 791) Many children were working in the same conditions instead of attending school.
As the world developing, the advancements in technology has become a heated topic. While the majority of labor union members believe it is immoral to have hi-tech machines do the jobs of human workers, the other majority of non-union workers opposed this idea. It has been said: "Majority ignorance is as common as majority wisdom" (Ruggiero, 2015, p. 23). Therefore, majority view should not be used as a measurement of morality in this instance, or in any other cases. For this case, what the development of the advanced technology does is not just to eliminate old jobs and also creates new jobs.
Many kids and adults had to work all day on their feet and never really got time to relax and go home. they had to work for hours in machines which could make people sick because there were pollutions and other chemical that gave people health problems and they may sometimes have died because maybe they couldn’t afford to go to the doctors because, workers in the factories didn’t really get pay that much because of how they work for long times . according to Document 2 it explains “ the hour labor was from 6 to t night; it was very difficult work “as a result, even though many people work they couldn’t afford to buy much food for their family and barely saw their kids and have a time to enjoy each other. Also there were many people adult that could no longer work and manger would offer little kids to work at a very younger age and didn’t have to go to school. Many girls who work had to tie their hair back because it would be catch on the machines.
These workers faced dangers everyday and received little pay. At the same time, many other people also had more money and leisure time. Henry George’s book, Progress and Poverty, talks about this divide. “ It was as though an immense wedge were being forced, not underneath society, but through society. Those who are above the point of separation are elevated, but those who are below are crushed down” (Document 3).
But there are few cases where people who are privileged enough to choose what kind of profession they want to pursue – one that doesn’t make them feel unhappy and dissatisfied. In literal sense, labor is the physical exertion of a worker but it doesn’t necessarily imply that just because it is external to the worker, it doesn’t belong to his or her essential being. There are workers who love their job such as the artists, directors, musicians and even the professionals. In countries with Communistic regimes, such as the state of West Bengal in India which has been under communism for many decades has experienced reduced industrial capacity, unrelenting demands from workers and decreased general industrial growth.
The United States Government can be described in two ways. There is unified government, which appears when the President and both houses of congress share the same party. Divided government is the opposite, it occurs when one party controls the white house, and another party controls one or more houses of Congress. A unified government should seem to be more productive because enacting laws would be much easier. A bill has to pass through both houses of congress as well as the president before it can be an official law.
Child labor was a great problem in the Industrial Revolution. Factory owners usually hired women and children rather than men. They said that men expected higher wages, and they suspected that they were more likely to rebel against the company. Women and children were forced to work from six in the morning to seven at night, and this was when they were not so busy. They were forced to arrive on time and they couldn’t fall behind with their work because if they did they were whipped and punished.
The term labour relations, refers to the system in which employers, employees and their representatives (management) and, the government who all interact and work together directly and indirectly to set the ground rules for working relationships inside and organization. labour relations has its roots stemming from the industrial revolution, where we saw the emergence of trade unions to represent workers and their rights. A labour relations system reflects the interaction between the main actors in the organization namely the government, the employer, trade unions and employees. Well set out labour relations in an organization safeguards fair labour practices, as well as contributes to long term success within the organization. There are multiple advantages to the Labor Relations Act, all of these advantages are put into place in order to protect the well being of the employee as well as the employer both on a fair and equal basis.
