WHITE PAPER Application for the Continuation of the current Affordable Care Act Introduction Since the election of our 44th President Barack Obama, one of Americas major concerns is the Affordable Care Act which was enacted on March 23rd, 2010. On January 20th at 9:00am the 45th President Donald Trump was elected into office with the plan of removal of the affordable care act and to re-implement a new form of affordable care instead of the current plan, also known as Obamacare. Essential benefits are 10 services that are provided essential to emergency and medical expenses. Healthcare.gov states that the essential benefits consist of; “Ambulatory patient services, Emergency services, Hospitalization, Maternity and newborn care, Mental health and substance use disorder services, including behavioral health treatment, Prescription drugs, Rehabilitative and habilitative services and devices, Laboratory services, Preventive and wellness services and chronic disease management, and Pediatric services, including oral and vision care.” The changes that are currently being revised within the new Affordable Care Act consist of changing the policy rules from every policy offered in the marketplace had to cover the 10 essential health benefits so even bronze plans had some base level of coverage, to allowing the states to decide whether they will require insurance carriers to cover the 10 essential health benefits. This is unbeneficial in the aspect of certain states will reject the 10 essential health benefits, requiring citizen on the Affordable Care Act to pay for expense which defeats the purpose of the affordable care act as a whole. Age rating ratios are an imaginary ratio that states older people may be charged more for certain items than younger people due to their age. With the current plan for the Affordable Care Act insurance carriers were not permitted to charge people of an older demographic more than 3x as much as a younger demo, meaning the ratio was 3:1. While the newest plan for the Affordable Care Act states that the age rating ratio may be 5:1, meaning that carriers can charge older demos 5x more for insurance than a person of a younger demo. What this is stating is that they would essentially increase the cost of insurance for older people to 5 times the cost of younger people. This is wrong because if you charge older people more for their insurance more of them won’t want to but insurance thus leading to older people not getting the treatment and necessary work to stay healthy and lead to more casualties within the older community. Opposition would state; “It makes sense for older people to pay more for insurance due to them having more issues with their health.” With that being said you could argue that due their age I can understand increasing their rates, but increasing rates once again would drastically reduce the amount of insurance policies paid for my older people causing more issues within older people causing for an increase in casualties amongst older
