The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is an act that was passed by President Barack Obama on March 23, 2010. This act was meant to focus on certain areas so it would be able to reform health care in the United States. The ACA focused on making healthcare more accessible, affordable and providing better quality care.

The ACA is important in the health care system because it has helped thousands of people throughout our country get insurance. Now insurances are responsible with providing summaries of benefits so people can compare before they buy into a plan. Insurance plans are required to offer essential health benefits such as emergency, laboratory, outpatient, and preventive services to all members. They would have to offer prescription drugs under their plans. The ACA required all citizens and legal residents to purchase a health plan if they could afford it. In the past patients with chronic disease were either dropped from their health care plan or denied from a new plan due to their illness. Many people were forced to pay for their health care out of pocket. Health care nowadays is very pricey. It was a shame that health care insurances could just drop or deny a person due to a condition. To me this was just inhumane. People who needed the medicines and the care were being refused it like it was their fault they were sick. No one wakes up in the morning and says well todays the day I diagnose myself with Cancer or any other terminal diseases. So, when the Affordable care act was passed it open options up for these people who for many years thought they had no one to turn to. They could get a health care plan that will cover their hospital visits and medications also were giving the option of being cared for at
