Since the passing of the Affordable Care Act in 2010, there has been much debate. Too much dismay of the American people Congress passed a mandate that every American must sign up for insurance coverage or risk being taxed. Since the election of President Donald Trump there have been many ideas on how to amend the Affordable Care Act.
President Trump signed an executive order on October 12, 2017 in an effort to modify the ACA in several ways. First, he will allow health insurance companies to operate across state lines. This was done in the hopes to drive up competition between insurers therefore decreases insurance costs to the American people. Also the ACA 10 essential benefits would not have to be offered. Many think this will mainly benefit you if you are healthy. People have the option to purchase a lower more cost effective plan but in the situation you become sick then you might exceed the limit of your plan (1). Also, there is speculation that health care cost will rise at a faster pace than under the previous Obamacare.
Of course there are other ideas on how to address the Affordable Care Act. Senators Graham and Cassidy would like to use the federal Medicaid funding and insurance subsidies to state block grants, allowing the state to design their own health care programs(1). This would go back to putting the general welfare statement in the Constitution under state control. Ultimately, this bill was not well supported.
Senators Alexander and Murray submitted a bill (Alexander-Murray Bill), allowing people to choose various health care plans. The coverage would be based on the plan you decided to purchase (2). The though process behind this would bring more people into the market, especially healthy people rather than opting to pay the penalty of being uninsured. This in change would lower the average premiums
