The Affordable Care Act was enacted in March 2010. The goal of Affordable Care Act is to expand coverage to all Americans, hold insurance companies accountable, lower healthcare costs while providing high-quality care for all. The implementation of Obamacare has helped over 32 million Americans get health insurance coverage by reducing premiums and out of pocket costs to families. The Affordable Care Act also puts a stop to insurance companies from denying coverage for those who had pre-existing conditions. Doctors are required to see more patients while providing quality care at a reduced cost. Affordable Care Act violates the principle of autonomy. Is it possible for doctors to provide better care at a lower cost? Is it ethical to mandate individuals to get insurance by violating their right to choose? Four fundamental goals have shaped our health care system. First, we want high-quality care that can provide the greatest benefits. Second, we want freedom of choice so that we can decide the “who, when, and where” for our health care. Third, we expect our health care to be affordable so that we have resources to do other things. Fourth, we want our fellow citizens to share the costs and benefits of health care (American College of Emergency Physician, 2011). Despite everything, keeping The Affordable Care Act will be more beneficial to all Americans because it provides affordable health insurance coverage to families and business, provides free preventative service, and it will eliminate lifetime and annual coverage limits. It is causing a shortage in primary care physicians. Patients are waiting longer times to be seen by a doctor. We are seeing an increase patient visits in the emergency room. Many people lost their employment-based health insurance due to owners of a small business choosing to pay for a penalty since it is more cost-effective to them. Obamacare also mandated individuals to get health insurance or pay penalty. This is taking away their right to freedom. The principle of autonomy is violated under this law.
