If you follow politics, or even if you don’t, you have most likely heard a lot of talk about health care. Right now, there is a lot of debate about Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Some people want repeal it, some people want to keep it, some people want to change it or expand it, or remove certain parts of it. There are a lot of different opinions. The debate surrounding the ACA is part of a larger debate about healthcare in America, and just like the debate about the future of the ACA, there are a lot of different opinions about how our healthcare system should work. Everyone pays into this program through income taxes, and when they reach 65 they claim their benefits. However, the taxes to pay for Medicare are not equally spread out. The rich pay a larger percentage of their income to Medicare, and the poor pay a smaller percentage. Because everyone gets the same benefits, this means that the rich pay in more taxes than they receive in benefits, and the poor pay less in taxes than they receive in benefits. Everyone pays in what they can, and everyone receives what they need. This program has been successful at providing for the health care needs of seniors for over 50 years, and remains popular today.
Unfortunately, Medicare only covers those over 65, but many people have proposed that Medicare be expanded to cover all people. In this system, often called Medicare-for-All, everyone would pay taxes into a fund, which would then be used to pay for the health care of anyone who needs it. The taxes would be levied so that the rich will pay a lot, and the poor and middle class will pay less.
