There have been many movements in the United States in which African Americans have been the focal point for example the Selma March, the March on Washington, the civil rights movement, and even today the Black Lives Matter movement. Those movements have had a significant impact on the United States and still play a part in today’s society. Those movements still play a part in today’s society because without those movements there wouldn’t be a Black Lives Matter because African Americans wouldn’t have the courage to stand up a fight for their rights if it wasn’t for Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X, Rosa Parks, or the many other activists that stood up for African-American rights. Selma and the March on Washington share a big relationship to the Black Lives Matter and they are just as important to the civil rights movement.
David Clark, an African American who served as the Sheriff for Milwaukee Wisconsin for 15 years referred to it as,“a vile vulgar slimy movement.” He is exactly right. It has done nothing but cause riots, anger, and hate towards police and american citizens. In the riots of Ferguson, and Baltimore, many people were injured and millions of dollars were lost in property damage.

The obvious movement we have going on today to help people of color is Black Lives Matter. This crusade is here not as a slash at non-colored people, as many of them think it is. Created to make a special place in a society raised on trying to make us feel bad about the color to our skin, many people will try to argue that All Lives Matter but when doing so they’re taking away the skin color they once forced so vigorously down our throats as a negative while we’re trying to turn it into a positive. It boosted in the last few years with the fault of police brutality towards unarmed 17 year old Trayvon Martin, and 18 year old Michael Brown. Barack Obama recently has come to speak up about the movement, “I think everybody understands all lives matter, I think the reason that the organizers used the phrase ‘Black Lives Matter’ was not because they were suggesting nobody else’s lives matter.
Today, the nation is gradually steering away from civil disobedience and is again trying to find a solution with violence. In recent news, the "Black Lives Matter" movement is happening. Many African Americans are protesting in the streets and public events and various other places, trying to fight for equality like our ancestors did in the 1950's through the 1960's. Many are protesting peacefully and not harming anyone but more and more African lives are being taken and this is sparking up another violent movement in which many African Americans may again try to fight for their rights and equality that they shouldn't even have to fight for.
It is a rather peaceful movement outside of troublemakers coming in. In the end police are attacking improperly against African Americans and they are just trying to get equal treatment. African Americans just want the racism to end, unfortunately some think that rioting is a major factor in making sure that gets accomplished. Some Americans are under the impression that police officers are under siege because of the Black Lives Matter movement. These Americans believe this because of the riots that have occurred due to the movement.
The importance of pro-black movements, specifically the Black Lives Matter movement, was discussed within the Speaker Series event, “The Importance of Non-Violent Protests to Oppose Racial Injustice in Ferguson.” Speakers Cori Bush and Osagyefo Sekou stressed the need African Americans have for their lives to be considered as important as the lives of non-minorities, recognition of anti-black terrorism, and the lack of safe spaces for blacks. The motives of the Black Lives Matter movement has been given connotations that do not equate to motives expressed by Bush and Sekou. The Black Lives Matter movement has changed how I view the world in many ways that have benefitted my life; it showed me that racism is still well and alive in our country, and that there are people who will do anything in their power to insure that you don't become a successful person. Even though that I knew that there were many people in the US who still had racist mindsets, I now know that our country hasn’t drastically evolved mentally, regarding race, in the last 60-70 years. The Black Lives Matter movement was born upon the murder of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin; a Black teenager who was murdered while walking home from a convenience store. The movement soon became a haven for African Americans to resort to with each life lost from police brutality. This social movement does an exceptional job of expressing the severity of police brutality while simultaneously empowering Black communities amidst tragedy. The Black Lives Matter movement is largely embedded in reform as it “seeks to change something specific about the social structure”.
Alicia Garza: co-creator of the #BlackLivesMatter movement (BLM) advocates that -“Black Lives Matter doesn’t mean your life isn’t important – it means that Black lives, which are seen as without value within White supremacy, are important to your liberation. Given the disproportionate impact state violence has on Black lives, we understand that when Black people in this country get free, the benefits will be wide-reaching and transformative for society as a whole. When we are able to end the hyper-criminalisation of Black people and end the poverty, control and surveillance of Black people, every single person in this world has a better shot at getting and staying free. When Black people get free, everybody gets free.” (The Conversation,2017).
