Although race relations in the United States between whites and African Americans have significantly improved since the abolishment of Jim Crow laws, director Spike Lee’s socially conscious satire, Bamboozled shows that discrimination has only evolved. Released in 2000, the film sought to edify the African American population about the racist and stereotypical treatments blacks endured during the Jim Crow era when they were used to entertain the white masses. Moreover, it also shows how that culture is still propagated today, with African American film makers just as guilty. From the time the first African set foot in the North American colony of Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, race relations have always been whites’ superiority over blacks.
One thing I found interesting in the beginning of the film was the name Angola which originated from the slaves that worked the fields came from Angola in Africa. At the Louisiana State penitentiary, you see history repeating itself back to slavery. With the way the officer put the inmates to work in the fields. Where the inmates would grow their own foods and get a little bit of money from working in the fields. At the Louisiana State Penitentiary Some of the pain of imprisonment demonstrated in the film where deprivation of liberty, and deprivation of autonomy.
In this movie, you see the life style on being a slave. Solomon Northup was a free man that was kidnapped and was traded off in the slave trade and endured the life style of a slave. There is a scene in the movie where he is building a house and the white man comes and tells him he is wrong and tells him to rip his clothes off so he can be whipped. Solomon refuse and takes a stand knowing that it is wrong he took a stand for what he though was right. This movie was primarily made to show the harsh conditions that they had to go thought but also an insider some of the slaves that made a stand.
Why did we use Africans? One reason the colonists turned to using africans to work on their plantations is because after native americans became close to europeans they got diseases and it was killing off some of their population. When the native american population was decreasing they needed more people to work for them so they started using Africans. The middle passage was when colonists sailed across the Atlantic ocean and packed slaves into cargo ships. Another reason they used slaves is because Africans came from a very hot place so when it was hot where the colonists live they could work longer because they were used to the heat beating down on them.
The book challenges Americans and how they treat American Values. The book exposed the truth of the white race and how they treated the black race. African Americans face a struggle with racism which has been present in our country before the Civil War began in 1861. America still faces racism today however, around the 1920’s the daily life of an African American slowly began to improve. Thus, this time period was known by many, as the “Negro Fad” (O’Neill). The quality of life and freedom of African Americans that lived in the United States was constantly evolving and never completely considered ‘equal’. During the 20th century, African American starting leaving the south. They left behind the racial segregation, discrimination, and violence in search of greater economic opportunity. This was the forming of the “Great Migration” of 1.5 million African Americans that happened between 1910 and 1945. Also another 6.5 million moved north and west between 1945 and 1970. Since the 1960’s, many black urban immigrants have achieved success where as some have been left behind.
Since the British justified their acts towards the Africans by labeling them as an inferior race and that they were below all other groups of people, Africans were viewed as barbarians and treated as such. Working as a clerk in a sugar plantation, Equiano was a witness to cruelties of every kind, which were exercised on his fellow slaves in the Caribbean plantations. Movie Analysis: Something the Lord Made Something the lord made is a movie depicts the tumultuous relationship of two leading pioneers in the field of surgery. The white surgeon Alfred Blalock and the black cardiac pioneer Vivian Thomas. Their partnership lasted for over thirty years and during that time important breakthroughs were made both in the field of medicine and in that of social equality in America. The reason why I chose to write an essay about this movie is due to the important events that transpire in it.
