Society tends to ignore the struggle of masculine norms men face everyday. In the film, “The Mask You Live In”, various ages of men discuss what it is like to live in a society filled with sexism and masculine norms. In the film, it is shown the impact of these norms society puts forth for men is catastrophic and negatively impacts their mental health. In a world that is drastically changing and becoming less and less humane, the people around us show separated traits that show what they are apart of: their conformity. People even condition children from the beginning to lose their innocence and become part of the society and follow their rules and ideals. In the novel Brave New World, there are traits given to the characters, such as their sexual drive, or their views towards the rest of the society, in order to give the reader the impression that is how they express conformity. Huxley uses these different satirical traits to express the unconscious conformity that he believes society has inherited.
Recently I completed this homework assignment by wearing a sports jacket and kaki pants to a business professional event where the preferred dress is to wear a suit. I know that this may not be one of the most daring social norms to break such as being loud in the library or walking through the drive through but that is the social norm that I chose to break. As I broke this social norm of wearing business casual at a business professional event I could see other people staring at me like I was out of place or did not belong at the event.

We should conform when the standards are trivial or if the standards keep people safe. Such as traffic laws or respecting others’ property. Or even simply raising a hand during class. We conform everyday, even when we don’t realize it. Conforming is a staple to any functioning society.
In society, there are many standards that people must uphold to. In western society, it is uncommon for men to have long hair or for women to have short hair. Naturally, people will be conscientious of their differences between other people and try to change them or cover them up, and often times people who do not follow the standard are looked down upon. This leads to people trying to fit into the groups around them almost thoughtlessly. However, when people conform without thinking, it can lead to dangerous consequences.
Incidents at my junior high school have occurred that included forcing a student to change into their gym uniform. In response, breaking dress codes have become the easier option to make girls feel more comfortable. Disobedience has a great extent of changing social views from a nation scale to a very small scale to accommodate one or mores belief. It is easy to misinterpret the concept of disobedience as just a threat to one or a nation. It may just simply mean that one is breaking the rules for the worse and creates social changes in a detrimental way.
In period two, Global Studies A, we learned about human nature (conformity, obedience, moral dilemmas). We learned the power of conformity. As a student, I, myself has conformed with my friends, I was afraid of being different, of getting judged. As humans, we conform, we may know that option A is wrong, but everyone else says option A, so we choose option A so we aren’t different.
Good morning, Ladies and gentlemen, today, the topic I shared is that “Should we be a conformist?” Well, my answer is negative based on several arguments. The gender norm I chose to violate was not wearing makeup. I chose to violate this norm because I realized how uncomfortable I am not covering up my face when other people are going to see me, no matter how short the amount of time they will be seeing me. This specific norm is tied to gender because of what it represents socially. There are numerous females in the west who use makeup in order to cover up perceived flaws and try to achieve perfection. As an industry, makeup has been used based on the low self-esteem and strives for perfection that western society imposes upon women.
Social conditioning covers things like, Respect, in which I have a difference in opinion on this one; I feel that disrespect is earned or learned. Most people tend to show more respect for strangers, and often time give those strangers more respect than they do their love ones. Another social conditioning issue is Commitment; what does it mean to you, and what is about? This is my question to you…Have you ever committed and/or finished anything wholesome; training, college, relationships etc.
Young girls being sent home for breaking the dress code rules is nothing new, but it 's big news these days apparently. Last night my brother and I were in a heated discussion (heated because we both have very strong opinions and loud voices and we 're stubborn. lol) over this topic. I 'm not that much of a prude, and I certainly have not been known as a rule keeper in my past, but I get the dress code thing. In my working life, if I was on machinery, the rule was to not wear anything that could get caught in the machine, tie up my hair, and no dangling jewellery.
