Why be different to just fit in? Why be different to just please others, because at the end of the day you are the person you are. People are faced with this challenge every day all over the world and you might not even realize it. Everybody has done it at least once in their life, but why fit in when you can just live your life and be yourself. People may say it is peer pressure but at the end of the day, an individual may choose whether to/or not to belong.
Merriam-Webster defines conformity as, “action in accordance with some specified standard or authority” (Merriam-Webster). With this definition in mind, one may discover that it is quite easy to conform into a society ridden with cliques of people and individuals that have similar interest as oneself. Although it may be easier to conform, conformity prevents the surrounding society from growth, inevitably making the society and its people horrendously boring and incapable of being a working individual in the stated society. Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s “Harrison Bergeron”, “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been” written by Joyce Carol Oates, and “Musée des Beaux Arts” by W.H. Auden all vaguely discuss the necessity of individualism, understanding
Society makes the rules and we follow them. Why do we follow them? Maybe it’s because we are scared of being different or judged. We are afraid to find ourselves due to the oppression of society. Alessia Cara’s song Wild Things represents who we truly are rather than pleasing society.
When somebody conforms, they join with the group. He or she doesn't want to draw attention to themselves or do anything that makes them stand out. Individuality, on the other hand, is a quality or character feature that separates one thing or person from another. There should be a balance of conformity and individuality in a society to have everything in one order. They are possibly better understood as two perspectives that can and do coexist to various levels in every society or community.
In today’s society the general attitude towards an individual is conform or be an outcast. It is seen in schools where people who do not fit into specific cliques become outcasts, the weird people. It is seen in the work place as well. People have conformed to standards set by society simply because society has said to do so. Society asks people to change themselves to fit in.
In today’s society, people probably will not get killed for being themselves, but they could be teased or bullied. Society today has so many rules to fit in, and most people are not willing to do those. Some of those rules are downright gross, or just really weird. Outside influences should not indicate who you are going to be, or change you. People should not fit others into a category, and those people should not be okay with it.
We may follow conformity or individuality. We choose to be someone else to be accepted or just be ourselves. Let people think what they want to think. Be weird if you want, be different.
Everyone has a natural desire to fit in. Everyone has a natural desire to be accepted by others. These desires are strong enough to cause individuals to give up there uniqueness. We are all told at a young age that everyone is different and that is wonderful. However, societal norms contradict this idea.
For some of the population, this isn’t a terrible idea either. Many people need to conform, so that they feel a sense of belonging, and for
For an utopian society to exist, there needs to be a merging of conformity and individualism in the society. Pure individualism or pure conformity in a society leads to a lopsided and corrupted society; they need to exist in synchrony. In Merry Mount, the people follow an ideology of complete freedom of thought and of individualism. The Puritan’s society shows what happens when everyone conforms and no one expresses their individual beliefs. When the ideologies of conformity and individualism merge it combines into a greater society as a whole, better than either of the individual half’s.
In all countries, religions, and cultures people are expected to live a certain way. For instance in puritan times people were expected to wear plain concealing clothing, and were supposed to live their lives by the bible. For example in the book “ The Scarlet Letter” Hester Prynne was shunned from society for committing adultery. In many ways people let society control who they are.
In society, there are many standards that people must uphold to. In western society, it is uncommon for men to have long hair or for women to have short hair. Naturally, people will be conscientious of their differences between other people and try to change them or cover them up, and often times people who do not follow the standard are looked down upon. This leads to people trying to fit into the groups around them almost thoughtlessly. However, when people conform without thinking, it can lead to dangerous consequences.
The internet says conformity is “the act of matching attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors to group norms… that guide their interactions with others.” Everyone conforms in some way, whether they intend to or not. In
People allow the societal norms to rule their lives, trying to dress and act as the society wants them to as opposed to what they feel like dressing or acting. In the past, however, the oppression had a more prominent effect. In post-World War
Individuality And Conformity In Public Schools Most academic professionals proclaim public education strives to help students achieve personal fulfillment, and create an environment that provides the education and training to create capable members of society. For example, graduation requirements teach students the essential skills one needs to be successful upon entering the workforce. However, this basic knowledge isn’t enough to give students insight on who they are. Nor is it enough to provide guidance on what one can achieve.
