The topic of gay marriage is a heavy subject matter with our society. There are two sides to this topic; one, you’re against it, and two, you’re pro same-sex marriage. William J. Bennett, a well known conservative who worked under President Ronald Reagan and President George H. W. Bush, has the belief that same-sex marriage would alter the definition of marriage changing it to something that could potentially cause confusion and chaos within our society, emphasizing why gay marriage should not become legal. Bennett expresses his perspective against same-sex marriage in his article “Against Gay Marriage” and in his book “The Book of Virtues.” Individuals who are pro same-sex marriage presume that homosexual couples are just as equal as heterosexual relationships. Andrew Sullivan, former editor of the New Republic Magazine, argues the point of legalizing same-sex marriage in his article “For Gay Marriage.” Sullivan defines his definition of what marriage is clarifying that marriage is ultimately is a “bond between two people” (Sullivan 30.) While both authors address same-sex marriage, Sullivan focuses more on why same-sex marriage should be legalized, however, Bennett seems more concerned with the negative impact on society same-sex marriage would have. …show more content…
Throughout his article “For Gay Marriage” Sullivan articulates the idea of legalizing same-sex marriage. He does this by mentioning the children involved with the homosexual couples and how they could potentially benefit from living in a household with homosexuals. With his belief that same-sex marriage should be legalized, he expresses his own definition of marriage making his points even stronger. He ends with pointing out that no matter what gender individuals are attracted to it only counts if they are happy with their life and who they are spending it
