There were multiple speeches and pamphlets that were given during the Age of Reason. During the Age of Reason the colonist were fighting for freedom from the British. Also during this time period people started to question their beliefs and way of life. The variety of different religions created during the Age of Reason was the Puritans and Deism. In Thomas Paine’s pamphlet “Crisis No.1” ethos is the most persuasive technique being used because he is able to relate to the patriots and convince the colonist to fight for their rights.
The Age of Reason is a name used to describe the age that influenced the American Statesmen of the Revolution. Taxes forced upon the colonists by Britain after the French and Indian War enraged the colonists, leading to the Revolution that would change the world forever. Thomas Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence and Thomas Paine’s The Crisis Number 1 were two very important works of literature during the Revolutionary period. Both works used persuasion effectively.
Thomas Paine, 18th century author of the popular papers entitled The American Crisis, was a devout Deist who, after the Revolutionary War, was questioned about his religion and so wrote The Age of Reason as a response. In many of his writings, Paine would make his writing appear Christian, but he, however, did not believe that, as he explained in The Age of Reason. In this work, Paine shows his antagonism and distaste of all religions, with Christianity being first and foremost. In his writing The Age of Reason, Thomas Paine revealed his true convictions and opinions on all religions. Thomas Paine denied and rejected the truth of Christ by using his earthly reason to understand the supernatural.
Age of Reason Assignment The Age of Reason brought forth many important documents that are foundational or influenced foundational documents. Two of those documents are the “Declaration of Independence” by Thomas Jefferson, and “Benjamin Franklin’s The Autobiography” by Benjamin Franklin. First, “The Declaration of Independence” is arguably one of the most well known documents in all of U.S. history. The author, Thomas Jefferson, claims many times how the King of England infringed on the rights of the citizens of Britain residing in the 13 colonies.

The increase of progressive ideas cultivated new forms of government and natural rights for citizens. As the ideas spread throughout Europe, the newly formed American colonies began to share these ideas. The Age of Reason greatly impacted the ideas of the American Revolution and the forefathers of the American government.
In the Age of Reason, also known as the Enlightenment period, times were changing. Originally, people’s perception of life was based on religion. Religion had answers to things such as why you were sick, or why you were poor. This time occurred in the 17th century when certain scientist, philosophers, and writers decided that there were other reasons besides religion on why things happened. Many believed that all life could be explained by scientific views rather than religion.
The Age of Reason caused citizens to arise in various actions in which can be represented as inquisitive and adaptable from the discovery of the natural laws and natural rights. Numerous of citizens were inquisitive about their own religion and own will, coming into conclusion in questioning their church and government. But others were quick to adapt on this discovery and the substandard ruling of the King of Great Britain, causing friction between the citizens in the colonies. In the Declaration of Independence, it cautiously describes the kind of expected behavior from these citizens for example the king imposed taxes without consent from the people. The Age of Reason In Europe, during the Age of Enlightenment or the Age of Reason, many philosophers gathered together to discuss their different but similar ideas to help shape the world we live in today. In the late 17th and 18th century, four enlightenment philosophers named John Locke, Voltaire, Adam Smith, and Mary Wollstonecraft focused on the same main idea. They believed in individual rights and presented their arguments through religion, government, economics, and equality for women.
Many great works have been published throughout history that have impacted us to this day in how literature is written and viewed. The Age of Reason specifically affects the American literary works, as well as many views we hold. Each work made during this period was used to help influence the colonies during this time period to break free from Britain and become an independent nation based on the belief of freedom. The first piece which is presented is Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” it was the first drafted document of the three presented in this piece and when the revolution era began they created pamphlets for the Middle class so a larger majority of Americans could join in and revolt against Britain.
The Enlightenment went against the political views, and morals of the Age of Absolutism. The Enlightenment challenged the views of the Age of Absolutism because it questioned the traditional authority established during this period by taking away the idea of single power, that had benefited the monarchs and the wealthy, and introducing the new idea of ruling for the good of the people instead. During the Age of Absolutism, rulers believed in the idea of single power, but during the Enlightenment, people started to challenge this idea and introduced a new form of government free of tyranny. It was an age dominated by Reason, which, until it provoked a reaction in such movements as Pietism and Evangelism, posed a formidable challenge to Christianity.
