Many great works have been published throughout history that have impacted us to this day in how literature is written and viewed. The Age of Reason specifically affects the American literary works, as well as many views we hold. Each work made during this period was used to help influence the colonies during this time period to break free from Britain and become an independent nation based on the belief of freedom. The first piece which is presented is Thomas Paine’s “Common Sense” it was the first drafted document of the three presented in this piece and when the revolution era began they created pamphlets for the Middle class so a larger majority of Americans could join in and revolt against Britain. “they could not, without manifest injustice to their children, say, ‘that your children and your children’s …show more content…

He points out the unjust idea of having their sons ruled by someone that just had the crown handed to him because of birth. Another point he makes is how it is setting the country up for future failure by allowing bloodlines to obtain the throne even when they are unfit to hold that power, whether it be they are just not a leader, or they are cruel and cold. The second piece “Crisis No. 1” was also crafted by Thomas Paine as a secondary document to influencing Americans in the middle class. “The continent must in the end be conqueror; for though the flame of liberty may sometimes cease to shine, the coal can never expire” (Paine 1) What Thomas Pain is saying is that in the end America must conquer England and gain freedom to conquer other nations. He says that the coals of liberation never expire so even when England forces the flame of the people to expire, the people must keep igniting it and fight against the British.
