Craig Haney’s article Mental Health Issues in Long-Term Solitary and “Supermax” Confinement illustrates the complications faced in solitary confinement emphasizing the rise in mental health challenges imposed. Particular attention is paid to the escalation in the nature of mental health-related issues, including the negative psychological effects of imprisonment. Haney discusses these increasingly widespread and specialized units that bring forward the issues presented taking into account the notion of isolation and the association of the high percentage of prisoners suffering from mental illnesses. The article briefly assesses the recent case law concerning the difficulty of mentally ill prisoners, suggesting that the majority of broader psychological problems have been overlooked by the courts.
I think that non-violence was important to him because he wanted to show that he was not going to be a mean ruthless guy to the white people. Because he did 'nt want people to think that all blacks are mean and harmfull. All he was trying to do is talk it out and acheive the goal of getting the right for blacks to vote. Like what he said in the letter form burrmingham jail "I am in Birmingham because injustice is here" he was being treated unjust for not doing anything
They have become alienated by society, and are strangers to their friends and family. The psychological impact of incarcerating an innocent or undeserving individual can be detrimental. Post-victimization disorders such as post acute stress disorder and PTSD can cause emotional detachment, despair, hostility, and increased risk of various phobias (Polifroni, 2018). Unwarranted subjectivity to extreme punishment and condemnation leaves victims with a host of potential social, emotional, and psychological deficits including distrust, dependance on institutions, diminished self-worth, post-traumatic stress reactions and more (Haney, 2002). The process of being incarcerated brings about several psychological adaptations, brought about by the extreme demands of living in prison.
The inner moral compulsion to obey is what drives most social organizations. Sykes (2007) described several structural defects that occurred in the New Jersey State prison. Sykes (2007) argues that power in prison is not based on authority therefore prison officials have to find other means to get prisoners to abide by the rules and regulations. The ability to use force to maintain order on a large scale in the prison is an illusion. According to Sykes (2007), Certain privileges such mailing and visiting, personal possessions, time-off for good behavior etc. are given to the inmate all at once upon his or her arrival to the prison.
T.V makes prison look like a scary place where a lot of bad things can happen, which they absolutely can happen, but chances are none of it will happen. Inmates don’t swear at officers or guards, or at each other. The prisoners get as much freedom as they can handle on the inside. While incarcerated, there is a type of ‘pecking order’. It's kind of like wealthy and poor, just without the money.
Should Prison Inmates Be Allowed to Take College Courses? What would be better than an entire nation educated and crime-free? Imagine what the world would be like if this were a reality. The idea of allowing prison inmates to take college classes has an undeniable appeal to a large portion of society. Allowing prison inmates to take college classes is a significant step in educating the population because it makes good use of all the extra time available in prisons, it helps former inmates get a better start when they are released, and it gives current inmates a sense of purpose and the desire to contribute to society.
Even family members of the prisoner individual can be affected by their family members time, the individuals family members have been reported to suffer from issues such as stress, mental disorders such as depression and anxiety as well as eating disorders, all because someone close to them is in prison. Not only can it affect the individual emotionally, it can also affect them socially and affect their ability to find a career after prison as they may be untrusted as law abiding
The main aims of the Stanford Prison Experiment were to study the roles that people play in a prison environment and to determine what psychological effects the role of prisoner and guard had on the young students. The study was carried out in a simulated prison in which researchers, led by Philip Zimbardo, observed and recorded the effects of the institution on the students. Zimbardo wanted to find out whether the atrocity reported among guards in American prisons was due to the deranged personalities of the guards or due to the prison environment.(McLeod, 2008) The prison setting in a basement of Stanford University was developed with the guidance of a consultant, it had solitary confinement, no clocks and secret recording operations. Once the prison setting was constructed the experiment was ready to be conducted.
What can be done The monitoring, prevention and treatment of mental disorders, as well as the promotion of good mental health, are part of the public health goals in prisons. According to World Health Organization (2017), even in resource-limited countries, measures can be taken to improve the mental health of prisoners and prison staffs, which can be adapted to the country’s cultural, social, political and economic environment (WHO, 2017). In the British prisons, some practices and policies have also been implemented, which reflect the positive impacts of prisoners’ mental health and wellbeing. Provide prisoners with appropriate mental health treatment and care.
Radicalization is the process in which individuals hope for a serious change within society. Several thoughts come to my mind when I hear radicalization of U. S prisoners. For several years it has been stated that radicalization of prisoners are a threat to citizen of the United State; I am a strong believer that radicalization can be positive or negative. Radicalization has shown not to always be negative. A person’s vulnerability and religion are both linked to radicalization.

Today, this sort of punishment would be considered cruel and unusual, violating the prisoner?s eighth amendment right. Prisons today have undergone much reform and inmates have been allotted more privileges and rights than those of the past. With the new accommodations, prisons have become like a resort for those who have become outcasts in society.
All visits are behind glass walls and a telephone. So, you can see your visitor, but you cannot hug them. Consequently, this is a main privilege lost, once you become a prisoner. Moving on, I was not uncomfortable. In fact, I was more fascinated than scared to be at a prison.
Prisons and Punishments Do you ever think about life behind iron bars? Locked up in a six by eight foot cell with another prisoner. Those who have committed a severe enough crime are sentenced to spend a portion of their lives in horrendous prison conditions. Prison conditions should not be an additional punishment. While some prisons have adequate standards, prisons around the world let their inmates suffer in horrid conditions: violence, sexual abuse, and overcrowding are some of the many.
