The book by Aileen Wuornos, Christopher Berry-Dee “Monster: My true story” tells the story of Aileen Wuornos from Florida who was a female serial killer and got sentence to death for her crimes. The book is a testimony of a serial killer and the report of Christopher Berry-Dee who spoke to her on the death row. He put together all her words from all possible interviews including the one he had with her and police tapes and composed a book with her true testimonies.
The book is divided in to three parts. The first one speaks of Aileen Wuornos chaildhood and early marriage. While the second one treats about her killings. Her first victim was Richard Mallory murdered on December 1, 1989. The killer states in her testimony that she only killed him because he was trying to rape her. He wanted to hand cuff her and abuse her body, which was like a trigger to her that turned the killing mode. As she says later, she slept with over a hundred guys but she killed only those six ones who threatened her. What I like about this part of the book is that Aileen, each time she spoke she tried to correct of what police and other people were saying about her. She wanted for the world to know the truth of what really happens thus she was aware that people were making money of off her popularity. We also find out form the story that Steve was taking money for Aileen’s interviews and a huge percentage of it was his salary. His is exposed as betrayer who sold Aileen’s story to Hollywood to get rich. The other person who also sold Aileen was her partner Thira with who she was in a long relationship. As it is later also said by Aileen the other people who made money of her story were local cups, who as we find out later on, surpassingly were torturing her to make her in to the serial killer. Later in the third part of the book we also find out that there were state officials who used the crime in their favor to win the election. This what upset Aileen the most. The police in Florida find the body of a dead man in the woods in Florida which immediately hits the news. They immediately say that the murder was a female and that she was caught. At the time of her arrest many people want to interview her, because it is unknown for a prostitute to commit the murder. It was usually the prostitutes who were the victims of such attacks. Throughout the whole trial Aileen claims that she killed those men in self defense. However people and jury believe that she should be charged with first degree murder and sentence for the death penalty. Aileen’s previous lawyer Steve in fact was very inexperienced in his profession and had no ability to fight for her rights. As we read later in the book that he never investigated anybody in her defense and never tried to win the case for her. Even more he would advise her to plead guilty. Aileen also claims that she has never had a fair investigation, a real trial and could not file proper appeals. Jeff Bush the governor of Florida signs the death warrant which surprisingly is a month before his reelection. However her last words scream for death. She no longer has the desire to live, and some people say is because Aileen lost her
