Alabama has a massive amount of forest land, and it takes a lot of people and time to keep it managed. Alabama has more than 22.6 million acres of forest land, it also has a lot of diverse soil, and different natural water sources. Most of the land is in use for lumber and pulpwood, and it also serves as a habitat for animals, and an asset to our daily life. Alabama’s tree’s that are harvestable have a massive 28.3 billion cubic feet of standing timber, which is the most amount ever recorded for the state. Alabama also has a lot of different kinds of trees, with both softwoods and hardwoods. A lot of Alabama’s forest land is privately owned and managed, around 94% to be more accurate with the number. Appx. 2.2 million acres are certified to be sustainable. Professional loggers are the reason that the wood industry is even a thing, because without them, no one would be their to harvest the wood and sell it to other companies for making houses, furniture, and other items. They move on an average of about 5,000 loads of wood a day. This keeps our lumber companies up and going and fed with wood, including the saw mills, pulp and paper mills, etc. Close to 2,000 individuals have been trained to become a PLM’s. Alabama’s loggers are the reason the logging part of our state is even viable, and makes a profit at all. Supposedly, a lot of the founders of the Alabama Forestry Association where sawmillers. Today, there are over 100 sawmills in Alabama, helping us make lumber to build houses, furniture, etc. The mills and in general lumber producers are the reason that we even have a lumber industry at all.
