INTRODUCTION Alfred Adler was born on February 7, 1870 in the suburbs of Vienna. He was the second of six children. His father was a Jewish grain merchant. He is the founder of Adlerian Psychology (Individual Psychology). His childhood was not idyllic. He had rickets due to which he could not walk till the age of four. He had to fight against life threatening pneumonia at age of five. These events motivated him to become a physician. As a kid, he was outgoing and popular. He was an average student at school. Adler had difficulty learning maths and failed in the tests. But he was determined to learn and excelled in maths. He received medical degree from university of Vienna in 1895. Along with Rudolf Reitler and Wilhelm Stekel they started Wednesday Night Meetings, a weekly discussion group, which led to the development of psychoanalytic movement. Later on they formed Vienna Psychoanalytic Society. Adler became the first president of the society. Adler had his differences with Freud and did not approve of his theory. Adler had a very different view and found himself disagreeing on very basic concepts. Freud had a pessimistic view of the human nature while Adler had an optimistic view. Freud analysed dreams for understanding the unconscious mind whereas Adler analysed dreams to understand the current lifestyle of the individual. The first 4-5 years of childhood forms a crucial role in the development of an individual. If child is hated or born with physical deformities and other factors which lead to an unhappy childhood causes the inferiority complex. School need to play a crucial role in identifying these children and helping them. School need to imbibe and inculcate good social behaviours in children as early as possible. It is easier to train kids at the beginning. Family need to be educated so that child can open to a normal social life. Family moulds a person.
