In each story, the way that the students learn is a major point the author was trying to get across.
One of her questions she had asked was, “How did Christopher Columbus “discover” America when Native Americans already lived there?” Her question was valid and looking back, I do wish history was taught with more factual detailed information. It seems one has to go looking for specific historical information to gain an understanding of how and why things became how they are today. Stuart Mclean, also changed the whole ending of the story. The class were the ones that sticked to the original story we did not change the ending or skip a big part and i liked it better that way. The authors use of red makes the novel The Red Badge of Courage come alive and makes it more dangerous. Puts the reader on high alert, “War, the red animal, war, the blood-swollen god, would have bloated fill.” (105) The way the author gives this vivid view of war is incredible as by symbolizing it as a god.
The change in the way the kids taught each other was evident. The blue eyed kids treated the brown eyed kids like they were less than them. The next day Elliot switched the roles. She made the brown eyed kids superior and the blue eyed kids inferior. She set up the same rules as the day before.
A class divided was an entertaining video to watch. I enjoyed watching Mrs. Elliott implement her exercise regarding discrimination and racism. It was also interesting how Mrs. Elliott 's third graders responded to her when they were asked a question about black people. Every students learns things different ways, and Torey made sure she taught to accommodate each individual child’s learning style. She also taught them etiquette and manners and defined what typical classroom behavior consisted of. The students who were ranked lower than the others had to wear collars to make it more obvious that they were ranked lower than their classmates. She had her students do flashcards on the days they were ranked low and then the days they were ranked higher. The students got nearly two minutes slower on the days they wore the collars. This shows how much being discriminated on effects a person confidence level. The students stated that they were distracted by the collars on their necks, which shows how blacks must feel in their everyday lives.
I was confused why she was focused on free Kindergarten, but this text was about educational injustices for African American children. This text served as a reminder that I take for granted opportunities that once were not granted to everyone. I think White America focuses in on certain aspects of the African American oppression and then just blocks out the rest of characteristics. Now, having no official teaching experience before, I was startled when it came time for me to design the lesson plan. My students knew literally nothing and my aims were manifold.
