In each story, the way that the students learn is a major point the author was trying to get across.
One of her questions she had asked was, “How did Christopher Columbus “discover” America when Native Americans already lived there?” Her question was valid and looking back, I do wish history was taught with more factual detailed information. It seems one has to go looking for specific historical information to gain an understanding of how and why things became how they are today. The authors use of red makes the novel The Red Badge of Courage come alive and makes it more dangerous. The change in the way the kids taught each other was evident. The blue eyed kids treated the brown eyed kids like they were less than them. The next day Elliot switched the roles. She made the brown eyed kids superior and the blue eyed kids inferior. She set up the same rules as the day before.

Every students learns things different ways, and Torey made sure she taught to accommodate each individual child’s learning style. She had her students do flashcards on the days they were ranked low and then the days they were ranked higher. The students got nearly two minutes slower on the days they wore the collars. The students stated that they were distracted by the collars on their necks, which shows how blacks must feel in their everyday lives.
I was confused why she was focused on free Kindergarten, but this text was about educational injustices for African American children. Now, having no official teaching experience before, I was startled when it came time for me to design the lesson plan. My students knew literally nothing and my aims were manifold. Rather intuitively, I realized my lessons should be based on my students’ needs, so first I conducted introductory informal interviews about their goals and expectations and later while observing progress and dynamics in class, I would adjust some of the topics and activities to better suit my students’ needs.
