All The Light We Cannot See Analysis All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr gave a glimpse of World War II from the perspective of two unlikely acquaintances. These two characters were exceptionally dissimilar, but they both experienced multiple difficulties and downfalls in their constantly changing lives. Even through each character’s never-ending nightmare, their true personalities were revealed, which both happened to be rather innocent and honest. Each main character had a sense of hope and adventure in the beginning of the book, but that slowly decreased due to the war. She had immense love and constant patience from her father, so she was very fortunate. Her father was a locksmith for the Museum of Natural History. Her life was turned around though, when she and her father dropped everything and evacuated Paris to live with her great-uncle Etienne in London. Here, she was exposed to anti-Nazi views by the housekeeper named Madame Manec. After Madame Manec passed away, Marie-Laure and Etienne continue her resistance efforts by collecting loaves of bread from Madame Ruelle. Baked inside the loaves of bread were Allied intelligence messages. This information was then broadcasted on Etienne’s radio that had been kept out of sight when all the radios were being collected. Etienne was later caught and arrested. During this time, Marie-Laure’s father had been arrested and put in a German prison camp on his way back to Paris. Marie-Laure lost two of her loved ones to the Germans during World War II, and experienced many other horrid things as a young girl in the time of the
