Identity is the distinguishing character or personality of an individual. A person’s identity is sacred. It is valuable. The reason why one’s identity is so important is because it defines who he or she is. A person would be unrecognizable without their identity. However, what if one’s identity is not acceptable to others? What if one’s identity is being compromised just because it is not ideal to society? Amy Tan, writer of “Mother Tongue”, writes about how language is her tool of trade and how she became an English writer. In addition, Delacey Skinner, author of “All Twisted Up by Gender Bender” writes about how she embraced her masculine side after hiding it. There are so many expectations for them from society, and so, it makes it very difficult for females to express themselves. Skinner mentions in her article how she wanted to be a boy; however, she had “to look and act more like a woman” because she began to like the way men paid attention to her. Men loves sexy and feminism-- not masculinity. Eventually, Skinner dressed up as a boy for a Halloween party and she dressed so well that she could pass as a man. This became a relief for her because she can stop trying so hard to be feminine and sexy. She prefers boy’s clothing and toys over girly nails, dresses, and accessories. It is important that she became comfortable with her appearances; however, her boyfriend broke up with her because dressing like a man “isn’t normal” (Skinner). This is exactly why it is hard for females to express their true identity because of society. It was difficult for Skinner to even express her masculine side because of individuals like her boyfriend who believes that it is a joke to lose her feminine image. It is wrong that these men’s expectation for a women is to be sexy, feminine, and to wear heels and dresses-- and not to just be themselves. Women should be able to dress how they want without the judgement of society. A woman should not have to be sexy for their man if that is not who they are. Women should be accepted for who they are. It is important that these expectations of how a women should identity and express themselves should not
