Allegory is a poem or picture that can be interpreted to reveal a hidden meaning, typically a moral or political one. So to say allegory is a story that is telling something actually happen. Basically representing a something and telling it in a story form. In the spiritual song Go Down Moses has some allegory in it. For example, Harriet Tubman embodys Moses in the song “Go Down Moses”. “Go down Moses way down to Egypt land”. Explaining that Harriet Tubman goes down north once she escapes from being a slave and brings slaves to the north with her to free them too. Another allegory is that Egypt land serves as the northern land. “Way down in Egypt land”. Meaning that when Harriet Tubman escaped to freedom she went down to the north to become the famous underground railroad conductor to save hundreds of families and carry them way down in the north. A third example is that slaves imitates my people in the song. “Let my people go”. Harriet Tubman risked her life to help lead the slaves to freedom. She escaped then she became a conductor and was freeing slaves so they could live a free life with their family. So most of the song “Go Down Moses” is made up of allegory. In the spiritual song there was a band of angels represent slaves that have been freed and is helping Harriet Tubman save other slaves to set them free. “A band of angels coming after me, coming to carry me home”. A group of people coming and helping free the slaves that haven’t been freed yet. Friends could be the slaves that have or are getting out before the others. “Tell all my friends im coming soon”. Meaning that she wants the person that might go before her or that as already been set free to tell her friends that she’s coming soon.
