“allmylifeforsale.com” is a website created by John D. Freyer, who decided to sell everything in his apartment on ebay. As part of his project, to appeal to as many viewers as possible and increase the chances for his item to sell, Freyer decided to attach personal stories and anecdotes to each item he listed, relying on only subjective descriptions. One of the many items listed on “allmylifeforsale.com” was a purple Benetton mens sweater titled as: “My Girlfriends` Favorite Sweater”. In the description of the sweater, John tells the story of how he came to work at a Bennetton store as a teenager and was required to wear the brand’s clothes while working. However, because he could not afford the expensive clothes, he was allowed to wear an item off the rack during his work hours and then place it back onto the rack at the end of his shift. Through his subjective description, John is appealing to a purchaser who would be captured by the story and more interested in purchasing a unique item with a knowledge of the history and significance of the item. Whereas, the other Ebay listings that used only objective descriptions are appealing to purchasers who are looking for a sweater to wear. While I found John’s descriptions entertaining and humorous, I would be more inclined to purchase a sweater that told me the size, condition, and fabric information. However, if I was looking for a novelty gift with a story behind it, I would certainly view his other listings and would be more inclined to purchase his item than one with simply dimensions or factual details.
