In Fast Food Nation, the author uses multiple rhetorical strategies to achieve an overall tone and effect. One device, however, was utilized throughout the book. To achieve the tone of disapproval, pathos, the appeal to emotions, was strongly used in each part of the book. For example, the book states, “At times the animals are crowded so closely together it looks like a sea of cattle, a mooing, moving mass of brown and white fur that goes on for acres.” This appeals to the readers emotions because it discusses the cruel treatment of cows.
In the articles “Don’t Blame the Eater”, by David Zinczenko and “What You eat is Your Business”, by Radley Balko both authors discuss how the government should have restrictions on fast foods, that are readily available to the public. Each of the author’s arguments are very effective and seem to establish a balance of ethos, pathos, and logos which make it easier for the reader to believe. In the article “Don’t Blame the Eater” the author David Zinczenko, writes about how some children and their parents are suing McDonalds because it is making them fat. Zinczenko uses ethos to point out that, only one family cannot say eating fast food is making them fat.
Zinczenko’s Rhetorical Precis In his essay “Don’t Blame the Eater,” David Zinczenko sympathizes for port fast-food patron, like himself ages ago, he agrees that food industry should take some responsibility for obesity. He supports his claim by warning consumers about the dangers of fast food,as it play a factor in obesity. Within his argument, he questions other counter arguments and uses his narrative tone to show consumers that the food industry is necessarily at fault. Zincenko believes the prevalence of fast food and the lack of healthier food alternatives is causing obesity in America.
Junk food is responsible for the growing rate of obesity. This is outlined by David freedman in his article of “How junk food can end obesity.” David Freedman has credited the “health-food” motion, and followers of it along with Michel Pollan. Freedman claims that if the America desires to stop the obesity epidemic, or at least reduce its effects, they must shift to the fast meals and processed meals enterprise for assist, now not the “health-food” movement.
It uses these literary devices throughout the essay. In the introduction to Fast Food Nation, Eric Schlosser states something very significant and memorable: “We are what we eat.” The drastic change in America’s eating habits has caused this American culture to grow into something never before imagined, for better and for worse. Our culture is eating so much worse than in the past, and it's affecting the world around us as well. “In 1970, Americans spent about $6 billion on fast food [over the course of the year]; in 2000, they spent more than $110 billion” (Schlosser 3). What Schlosser is saying is that America’s addiction towards fast food is increasingly worse.
Introduction In the year 1993 a sociologist named George Ritzer wrote a book called The McDonaldization of Society, which wasn’t about how the deliciousness of McNuggets has revolutionized the world, but instead focused on how the methodology and rational structuring used at the McDonalds franchise functions. The concept is that traditional ways of thinking are replaced by ends/means focused goals, sense of social control and prioritization of efficiency. In the words of Ritzer McDonaldization is “the process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as the rest of the world”. These methods are logos, pathos, and ethos. Logos is an argument or form based on a logic, pathos make appeals based on emotions and ethos is the form or appeal of character or credibility. Using these three methods is a way to analysis how McDonalds persuade, inform, and reminder in advertisement.

This article occurred in connection to two children documenting a claim against McDonald's for making them fat. In his article Zinczenko states, “I tend to sympathize with these portly, fast-food patrons, though. Maybe that’s because I use to be one of them''. This imagery is very effective and does have an impact on the audience because it shows how we’ve let the fast food industry to become a way of life by making it into a life routine.
