Alzheimer’s treatment should be funded directly by the taxpayers instead of the government. One of the most common problems the elderly population faces is Alzheimer's disease. Dementia is a disease that causes loss of memory and cognitive function. Dementia comes in different types and Alzheimer’s disease is one of those types. This disease is mostly common in the elderly population. Alzheimer’s disease has also been diagnosed in people who are in their early forties. If the taxpayers paid for disease research, it would help the research go faster and there would be more funding opportunities for the public to participate in. Radiation so far has been found to reduce the memory effects of Alzheimer’s, but with this treatment there are concerns of the damage that radiation causes. According to Benson he mention some details about trials for Alzheimer’s. “We all hope that one or more will be successful in the near future, but we cannot know until the trials are completed and the results are published” (Benson 4). Dementia typically cannot be diagnosed until autopsy because of the way the disease affects the brain. This disease for some doctors is hard to understand because of the symptoms and because of the difficulty to diagnose it on a living person. Healthline states, “The clinical diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease by a physician due to his [or her] experience in the area is usually right, but not always (Barclay).” When it is diagnosed, currently there are some medicines that help control the symptoms but do not provide a cure. The public should invest more into the cure for this disease that is affecting those younger than sixty-five. With the public invested in the research for this cure they would be able to raise money for a possible cure for this disease. An article from Mlive states, “Researchers have shown great interest in exploring how boosting synapse formation can potentially benefit not only Alzheimer’s disease but also other cognitive disorders such as schizophrenia and learning/developmental disabilities such as fragile X syndrome (Martinez).” This definitely is a step toward a cure for this disease. If society invested in disease cures, we would have more cures to diseases faster than with government funding. Community funding would be more efficient and maybe gather money quicker than government funding. If society put effort into finding a cure for Alzheimer’s disease
