According to Healthy People 2020, Alzheimer’s disease was the 6th leading cause of death, in all ages, in 2013. Alzheimer’s disease in one of the most common forms of dementia (Healthy People 2020.) Dementia is the loss of cognitive functioning such as thinking, remembering, and reasoning. It is to an extent that it interferes with a human’s daily life. (Healthy People 2020.) This paper will include a few insights on dementia and demented patients quality of life care. Dementia impacts a patient’s life because they are unable to live the life they are used to. They are unable to live independently, make medical decisions, at greater risk for falls, and unable to carry out daily needs such as preparing meals, bathing and dressing. (Healthy People 2020.) This can impact nurse’s care because if a demented patient is refusing to take their medication, a nurse could take it to her advantage and have one less patient to give medication to. According to Quality of life in people living with dementia in nursing homes, reduced quality of life for dementia patients can be due to limited relationships with staff and family members. It’s important for nurses to try and develop a strong relationship with their patient’s because they are more likely to take their medication, get dressed for the day, and eat their meals. Dementia patient’s need patient nurse’s working with them because they require special care and they a lot of the time do not know what’s best for themselves anymore. Nurse’s need to always be on their toes when working with dementia patients because one day they can have a strong relationship with them, and the next day they could be the total opposite. A nurse can help with elderly people who have dementia by practicing good evidence based care and trying to make it apart of the hospital
