Abstract: The active ageing paradigm aims to contribute to the expectation of a long, autonomous, independent and healthy life. Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) promotes the development of technological solutions that might have a key role not only to optimize the support services for older adults but also for the mitigation of their disabilities. This paper presents a systematic literature review of the impact of AAL technologies, products and services in terms of health-related outcomes. Its main objective is to contribute for the understanding of how state-of-art AAL solutions might influence health conditions and quality of life of older adults. Two keywords were used without language restriction: i) ‘Ambient Assisted Living’, as this was the focus of this review; and ii) ‘Ambient Intelligence’ (AmI), since AAL is one of its sub-areas.
The search was performed on the 13rd of February 2017 and included all references published after the 1st of January 2007 (due to the fact that the Joint Programme Ambient Assisted Living from the European Union was proposed in 2007 [5]) until 31st of December 2016.
In terms of inclusion and exclusion criteria, the articles were included if they reported studies related to AAL or AmI, and if the reported solutions might influence health conditions and quality of life of older adults. Furthermore, articles were excluded if they were not written in English, if they did not have abstracts, if they were prefaces, or if they reported reviews, surveys and market
